California-San Diego State Postgame Quotes
California Head Coach Ben Braun
General comments on the game:
"I thought our team did a good job on a number of counts. I thought our team was very focused tonight. I thought our team did a good job defensively. You can chalk this one up to Peter Haas and say this one was for him."
"We weren't exactly lighting it up offensively early. They weren't going to give up any easy ones. We got 26 points off turnovers."
On Leon Powe:
"I thought Leon Powe did a good job on the double team tonight. It's a good compliment. Bad players don't get double-teamed. "
On Rod Benson:
"Rod Benson stepped up tonight with solid minutes and a great effort."
On Richard Midgley and Ayinde Ubaka:
"That's going to help our team if we get solid play from our guard spot."
On Leon Powe and two late fouls on him:
"It shows how mentally tough he is. It's important our guys maintain their composure and play with class. I'm proud of our guys."
On Richard Midgley scoring his 1,000th career point:
"Richard has had a great career at Cal. He's such an underrated defensive player. Tonight was a great milestone for him. He's really been a factor for us."
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher
On turning the ball over:
"I know for a fact we played exactly how we had hoped we would play; we had a three- or four-point lead, missed a couple shots to extend it and then I think we had seven turnovers in eight possessions in a stretch in the first half. We talked about it at halftime and came out in the second half and unfortunately turned it over the first five or six times we had the ball."
On playing well in spurts during the game:
"What happened to us tonight happened to us before and it's a danger sign. When we have stress, we try to do too much individually, we try to gamble and make a steal, rather than just settling in and playing vanilla and very basic. We tried to do too much and the results are very evident when we do things inappropriately and too fast. Usually they snowball and they did on us tonight."
On Brandon Heath:
"Brandon is a wonderful young guy and I have said this before and I mean it with all my heart - no one wants to win more than Brandon, yet he must be able to control his emotions and energy when things aren't going well."
