The No. 7-ranked Cal women's water polo team got goals from its top two scorers, sophomore Elsie Windes and junior Allison Gold, in overtime, as the Golden Bears defeated No. 10-ranked San Jose State, 9-8, Sunday at The Aquatics Center in San Jose. Cal improved to 14-8 overall and 5-5 in the MPSF, while San Jose State fell to 10-15 overall and 2-8 in the MPSF. It was the Bears second consecutive overtime win as Cal upended UC Santa Barbara, 10-9 in overtime Apr. 10. Windes now has 42 goals on the season, and Gold 32 goals.
In first overtime period, Windes took advantage of the man-up situation and shot from in front of the goal for the 8-7 lead. In the second three-minute overtime period, Gold scored at 2:33 to give the Bears a 9-7 lead. San Jose State's Rachel Rhodes bounced the ball off the water in a man-up situation to score for the Spartans at 2:06. San Jose State then had a chance to tie the match with less than 30 seconds remaining, but turned the ball over with 23 seconds left, and Cal ran out the clock without SJSU touching the ball.
The Spartans lost Laura Scott, its top season scorer near the end of the third quarter. She picked up her third exclusion of the match with 1:10 and could not play the rest of the match. San Jose State lost two other top players in the fourth quarter as Katie Morgan and Faviola Del Real each picked up their third exclusion in the match during the fourth quarter. San Jose State had to play parts of the fourth quarter and both overtime period without the players.
Cal had a 3-2 lead after halftime. The Bears got a goal from junior Brittani Llorente in the first period and two goals from Windes in the second. The Spartans got goals from Mary Beth Cox (first period) and Rhodes (second period).
In the third period, San Jose State tied the match at 3-3 at 4:27 with a goal by Morgan. She took a pass from Rhodes and shot at the goal with one second on the shot clock. The Bears got a goal at 3:06 as freshman Vanessa Lindsey got a rebound goal after Spartan goalie Krissy Hansell made a save on a Cal shot but could not clear the ball from in front of her. Scott tied the match at 4-4 with a goal at 2:42 off a pass from Morgan that Scott put into the right corner of the goal. Windes scored her third goal of the game with 1:31 remaining in the third as she took advantage of a ball being tipped around the goal.
In the fourth quarter, Cal jumped out to a 6-4 lead on a Windes' goal at the 6:32 mark. The Spartans then scored the next three goals of the match. Del Real bounced the ball into the goal at 4:41 on a man-up situation. With another Cal exclusion, Cox scored at 3:56 to tie the match a 6-6. Del Real then gave the Spartans the lead as she stole the ball from Cal as they were coming down the pool. She swam back to the Spartans' offensive end where she passed the ball around before she shot the ball in to the lower left corner of the goal. The Bears did not give up and scored on a Del Real exclusion as Llorente scored with eight seconds left in regulation to tie the match at 7-7.
San Jose State goalie Krissy Hansell made 11 saves in the match for the second consecutive day. Cal goalie Brittany Mohr made four saves in the win.
