The No. 8-ranked California women's water polo team scored the first three goals of the match and never looked back, defeating No. 9 San Jose State, 7-5, in the first round of the 2005 MPSF Tournament Thursday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears improved to 16-9 overall, and will face No. 3 Stanford (18-5) in the MPSF quarterfinals, Friday, Apr. 29 at 12:45 p.m. The Spartans fell to 11-17 and will play No. 6 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Apr. 30 at 9:45 a.m.
Juniors Allison Gold (3:58), Breana Allison (2:32) and Lauren McGee (1:00) got the Bears off to a fast start in the first period before San Jose State's Jamie Schneider finally got the Spartans on the board with 29 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Cal outscored San Jose State, 3-1, in the second period as well. McGee scored her second goal of the match with a nice tip shot off a pass from Brittani Llorente with 2:17 left in the half. Kate Morgan scored for the Spartans at 1:51 to make the contest, 4-2, but Llorente countered with a long shot with 57 seconds left, followed by Gold's lob shot with a second left in the half for a 6-2 Bear advantage.
San Jose State's Laura Scott scored the lone goal in the third period at 4:59 in the quarter. Cal freshman Molly Hayes scored the first goal of the fourth period with a shot at 4:20 left in the match to give the Bears a 7-3 lead. The Spartans made a run at the end of the contest on goals by Morgan (3:38) and Mary Beth Cox (:48).
Cal goalie Alex Feune de Colombi finished with a strong match, recording 10 saves. San Jose State goalie Krissy Hansell had six saves.
