BERKELEY, CA - Junior Allison Gold scored twice and made a key defensive play in the final minutes to lead No. 8 California to a 9-7 victory over No. 13 San Diego State in the semifinals of the 2005 MPSF Tournament Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears upped their record to 17-10 and will face No. 5 Long Beach State (21-8) in the MPSF fifth-place match, Sunday, May 1 at 12:15 p.m. San Diego State fell to 15-18 and will play No. 18 Cal State Northridge Sunday at 11 a.m. in the seventh-place match.

With 2:32 left in the match and the score tied, 7-7, Gold scored from four meters out after a Cal timeout to give the Bears an 8-7 advantage. She followed her offensive exploits by stealing the ball from Aztec two-meter Monica DeRosier on San Diego State's next possession. Gold then sealed the win for Cal by lobbing a shot over Aztec goalie Sarah Kilgore with 1:43 left in the match.

The Bears had owned a 6-3 lead at the half after junior Shaina Feldman had tallied two goals in the first period. Junior Lauren McGee added a goal in the first quarter, sophomore Elsie Windes had two goals in the second period and junior Brittani Llorente also scored in the second period.

San Diego State came roaring back, going on a 4-0 run to tie the contest 6-6 on goals by Elana Cervantes, Rachel Serna, Ashley McCullum and Stacy Werner. Gold scored on a 6-on-5 advantage with 5:37 in the fourth period to give Cal a 7-6 lead, but Serna scored her second goal of the match for the Aztecs with 4:08 left to again tie the match, this time at 7-7. However, Gold was able to notch her two key goals to advance the Bears to Sunday's MPSF fifth-place match against Long Beach State.
