BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - DeVon Hardin had 12 points and seven rebounds to lead California to a 75-51 win over Chicago State in the opening round of the Golden Bear Classic on Friday night.
Theo Robertson also had 12 points for the Bears (7-2), who play San Diego in the championship game Saturday.
California struggled offensively early on but broke the game open early in the second half, going on a runs of 9-0 and 16-6 down the stretch.
The Bears trailed 31-24 with 5:30 remaining in the first half when Chicago State suddenly went cold on offense and stopped scoring. Cal took advantage, closing out the first half with a 13-1 run punctuated by an Omar Wilkes lay-in just before the buzzer that gave the Bears a 37-32 halftime lead.
The Cougars never got going in the second half, shooting 8 of 28 from the floor and making only four baskets over the final 6:30.
Cam-Ron Clay scored 14 points to lead the Cougars (3-7) but fouled out with 4:27 left to play.
Wilkes and Ayinde Ubaka both finished with 10 points for Cal.
