BERKELEY - After going undefeated in the opening weekend of their season, the California Golden Bears came up empty handed against the defending national champion, Maryland, on Tuesday morning. The Terrapins blanked the Bears, 5-0, at Maxwell Family Field.

Maryland got off to an early scoring rout. Four minutes into the game Maryland's Alexis Pappas scored the first goal. Nine minutes following Pappas' goal, Paula Infante converted on a penalty corner for the Terps. Right before the half Emily Trycinski of Maryland scored off a pass from Nicole Muracco.

Cal had a difficult time moving the ball forward on Maryland's defensive pressure. The Terrapins drove the Bears to the sidelines often during the game. Senior forward Valentina Godfrid did have Cal's lone shot attempt in the first half. However, Godfrid was held scoreless for the first time since last year's Wake Forest game (11/12).

In the second half Maryland scored twice on the Bears. Both goals were by Susie Rowe off penalty corners.

Defensively for the Bears, sophomore goalkeeper Veronica Sykes had five saves, but allowed the five goals.

The Bears return to the field on Friday, Sept. 1, when Columbia makes an appearance in Berkeley. The match is schedule for a 7 p.m. (PST) start at Maxwell Family Field.
