FARMVILLE, Va. -
California won its second game in two days when it blanked NorPac Conference opponent Radford, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at Longwood's Athletics Complex. The Golden Bears improved their record to 3-1 and 2-0 in the NorPac, while Radford fell to 0-3 (0-1 NorPac).
The Highlanders played a defensive first half, which ended in a 0-0 tie. The Bears took control in the second half despite a light rain.
"Tactically they played us half court, everyone one side of the 50, and jammed the space," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said. "That made it difficult, with them in a defensive stance, hoping to get a counterattack. We had a lot of near misses and you almost get frustrated.
"We figured it out in the second half. After the first one [goal], we seemed to relax."
Sophomore forward Natalie Nurnberg scored that first Cal goal and later scored her second. Senior defender Carolina Bistue and senior midfielder Andrea Lo each scored once.
"Natalie Nurnberg played real well," Onstead added. "Alo [Andrea Lo] has been quite good all weekend. Gwen has played well in the middle. The player of the match today was probably Natalie."
Senior goalkeeper Kelly Knoche played most of the way for the Bears, with freshman Maddie Hand taking over near the end of the game.
The Bears return to action on Sunday, Sept. 7, when they play Appalachian State, another NorPac opponent, at 7 a.m. PT also at Radford's Athletics Complex.
Due to technical difficulties, a box score is not yet available from the Cal-Radford game.
