COLLEGE STATION, Texas - No. 11-ranked California women's tennis freshman Jana Juricova advanced to the round of 32 at the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis singles championship on Wednesday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Juricova claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 51 Katrina Tsang of North Carolina and will be joined in the second round by a pair of Golden Bear sophomores in No. 26 Marina Cossou and No. 41 Mari Andersson. Singles round of 32 matches will begin at 8 a.m. PT on Thursday (May 21). No. 32-ranked senior Bojana Bobusic was not as fortunate as she fell in her third set tiebreaker.
Juricova and Tsang stayed close until the first-year Bear was able to break free with two straight games to take the first set, 6-4. Tsang fought hard to keep up with Juricova in the second set but Juricova turned Tsang's efforts away with a 6-3 win. Juricova draws a familiar foe in the second round and will face No. 76 Mallory Voelker of Denver in a 10 a.m. PT match. The first time the two met, Juricova walked away with a 6-1, 6-2 win on March 19.
Cossou drew No. 40 Anastasia Revzina of Florida and came away with a solid 6-2, 6-3 win to advance to a 10:30 a.m. PT match against No. 2-ranked Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas. Andersson met No. 56 Nadja Gilchrist in the opening round and made off with a 6-2, 6-4 win to set herself up in a 9:30 a.m. PT match against No. 17 Laura Gioia of Furman. The win was Andersson's 25th singles victory of the year as she became the sixth Bear to cross the 25-win mark.
Bobusic faced No. 8-ranked Marrit Boonstra of Florida in the first round; the opponent that knocked her out of contention at the ITA Indoor Championships on Nov. 6, 6-4, 6-1. The second meeting was not as easy for Boonstra however. Boonstra took the first set, 6-3 but Bobusic replied with a 6-3 win of her own in the second. The two stayed toe to toe in the third and went to a tiebreaker. Bobusic found herself down 3-2 early on but fought for a three-all tie. Boonstra then went on a three-point tear to take a 6-3 lead but Bobusic showed her fight once more to draw to within a point at 6-5. Boonstra put an end to things however as Bobusic returned a serve long of the baseline to end the match.
The doubles championship begins Thursday (May 21) following the conclusion of singles matches. No. 7 Andersson and Juricova will face No. 12 Whitney Chappell and Alex Haney of Auburn in a 4 p.m. PT match. No. 35 Cossou and senior Claire Ilcinkas have withdrawn from a scheduled match with No. 10-ranked Natalie Pluskota and Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee due to the injury suffered by Ilcinkas in the team championship final. Ilcinkas was also scratched from the singles championship. Please check http://www.aggieathletics.com/ncaa2009/tennis for updates and live streaming video.
