COLUMBUS, Ohio - In their first meeting since the 1981 national collegiate championship, California and Harvard kicked off Pool A play at the Collegiate Championship Invitational at Crew Stadium Friday night, with the Golden Bears shutting out the Crimson, 42-0, in their seven-a-side match.
Sophomore winger Anthony Lombardo scored two tries, with freshman Seamus Kelly adding another as the Bears built a 21-0 first-half lead. Sophomore Danny Barrett was joined in the try-scoring column by Dustin Muhn and Connor Ring in the second stanza, with Keegan Engelbrecht connecting on all six conversions kicks.
It was a good start for the Bears' first-ever assembly as a sevens team, the same format that will be employed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where rugby will make its return after a 92-year absence.
Cal's win over Harvard puts the Bears into a tie in Pool A with Dartmouth, which defeated Notre Dame, 19-5, later in the evening.
Each win is worth 3 points, with a draw worth 2 points and a loss 1 point. The top-two teams in each pool advance to the single-elimination championship quarterfinals on Sunday, while the remaining teams vie for honors starting with the quarterfinals in the challenger bracket.
Sunday's semifinals and finals in both brackets will be broadcast live on television, with the semis on Universal Sports 11 a.m.-1 p.m. PT and the finals on NBC 1-3 p.m. PT.
