Four Bears Score in Victory At St. Joe's

Four different Bears scored as the No. 11 California Golden Bear field hockey team opened a three-game weekend road trip in Philadelphia with a 5-2 victory over Saint Joseph's.
Sophomore Andrea Earle scored her 11th goal of the season less than two minutes into the game, taking a long pass from junior Lauren Livingston and tipping it in past the keeper.
St. Joseph's tied the game, 1-1, at the 11:32 mark, scoring after a penalty corner. Cal quickly stole the momentum right back with Lara Kruggel scoring 45 seconds later, taking a long shot from just inside the circle to put Cal up 2-1.
Juniors Lauren Livingston and Deanna Kennedy scored back-to-back goals deep into the first period, with Livingston knocking in a rebound after a save at the 21:58 mark and Kennedy tapping in a loose ball into the corner of the cage at the 23:21 mark.
Cal held a 4-1 advantage at the half. The Bears fifth goal of the game was the second of the contest for Livingston, who tipped in a long pass from Rachelle Comeau. Saint Jospeh's scored its second goal two and a half minutes later when Theres Doyle got a ball through the legs of Cal keeper Maddie Hand. It was the last goal of the contest with Cal holding on for the 5-2 victory.
The win is the Bears ninth of the year, putting them at 9-2 overall and 2-1 in NorPac play. Saint Joesph's falls to 2-6.
Maddie Hand got the decision in goal, improving to 8-2. She had five saves, playing 62:29 minutes in goal. Redshirt freshman Courtney Hendrickson played the final seven-plus minutes of the game, but did not register a save.
Andrea Earle scored her conference-leading 11th goal of the season. Deanna Kennedy scored her first of the season. Lauren Livingston had two goals and an assist. Rachelle Comeau had a pair of assists. 11 different Cal players had at least one shot in the game. Cal outshot the Hawks 22-12.
"Everybody played really well today," said head coach Shellie Onstead. "We had some opportunities today in the circle that we didn't connect on. It gives us something to work on these next two games. We are happy about this win and now we are 100 percent focused on getting through the rest of the weekend."
The Bears have two games remaining on this trip. They will take on the Temple Owls tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 30, at 12 noon Pacific Time. They close out the trip with a 9 a.m. Pacific Time game on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Drexel.
