BERKELEY -
With eleven different players scoring, the No. 2-ranked Cal women's water polo team concluded the Cal Speedo Invitational 4-0 with a 21-3 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night (Jan. 28) at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears were led by senior Elizabeth McLaren, sophomore Alexandra Hill and freshman Tiera Schroeder with three goals apiece as they improved their overall season record to 8-0.
Other top scorers for Cal against the CSMB were sophomores Emily Turner and Jennifer Talbott, and freshmen Victoria Williams and Chris Baker, with two goals apiece. Freshman goalie Savanna Smith finished with 10 saves.
Earlier on Saturday in a 3 p.m. match, the Bears had their tightest match of the season with an 8-6 win over Loyola Marymount. In that match Cal was led by junior Breda Vosters' four goals, and a key goal by McLaren with 1:58 left in the contest.
On Friday, Cal had defeated Pomona, 21-4, and Cal Baptist, 14-6, to finish the tournament outscoring its opponents, 64-19.
The Bears' match against LMU became close when the Lions' Whitney Delgado scored with 49 seconds left in the third period and then scored again with 3:12 left in the match to get her team within 7-6. But McLaren was able to make the clinching shot towards the end of the match. Junior Dana Ochsner was able to block a Lions' pass into two-meters, which set up a Bears' counter-attack and allowed McLaren to give Cal the two goal cushion.
Besides Vosters' four goals, and McLaren's goal, sophomore Ashley Young scored twice for the Bears and Schroeder also tallied a goal for Richard Corso's squad.
