HONOLULU - Despite outhitting the Rainbow Wahine 7-3, a 16-stikeout performance from Jolene Henderson and owning a 1-0 lead heading into the top of the 10th inning, a walk-off homer by home team No. 18/19 Hawaii handed No. 1/2 California its first loss of the season, 3-1.
In accordance with the international tiebreaker rule, Jace Williams was placed on second to start the 10th. A sacrifice bunt by Elia Reid advanced Williams to third and she scored when the Hawaii shortstop bobbled a Jolene Henderson grounder.
The Wahine tied things up 1-1 in the bottom of the 10th when Sarah Robinson singled to left and a throwing error allowed Kayla Wartner to score. Jessica Iwata homered to end the game with a 3-1 Wahine win.
Pitching a nine-inning three-hitter, Jolene Henderson fanned a season-high batters. She gave up just two earned runs. Despite the impressive outing, Henderson drops to 13-1.
Stephanie Ricketts threw the 10 inning victory, allowing seven Cal hits, walking seven Bears while striking out 12. Ricketts moves to 13-1.
Despite outhitting the Wahine by four, Cal left 17 runners stranded. Britt Vonk paced Cal with three hits.
The loss to Hawaii was the second game of a Thursday doubleheader for Cal, which defeated No. 6 Texas 6-3 prior to taking on the Wahine. Both the Bears and the Wahine entered this week undefeated with the Longhorns thwarting Hawaii's winning streak on March 13.
The game against Hawaii was the first extra-innings outing of the season for the Bears. Cal is now 19-9 in the all-time series with the Wahine.
