Cal Falls To No. 24 Washington On Senior Day

BERKELEY - The California women's gymnastics team dropped a 196.250 - 191.775 decision to No. 24 Washington on Senior Day & Alumni Day Sunday afternoon inside Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.

The Golden Bears honored their three seniors - Alexandra Leggitt, Erica Varon and Shana Johnson - and alumni in separate ceremonies at the conclusion of the meet.

Cal scored a season-high 48.750 on the balance beam, led by Nicolette Lew's 9.825 to place third overall in the event. Senior Erica Varon and sophomore Alicia Asturias tied for sixth place overall with a score of 9.750. For Asturias, the mark matched her career-best score in the event. For Varon, the score was a season-high. Freshman Crystal Paz was right behind in ninth place with a score of 9.725, while junior Madisyn O'Brien posted a score of 9.700 o place 10th overall. Washington's Paige Bixler took home top honors on the beam with a score of 9.900.

The Bears recorded their second-best score of the season in the floor exercise with a mark of 48.525. Leggitt led the way for Cal with a score of 9.800 to tie her career-best mark in the event for the second-straight meet and place fifth overall. Junior Chelsea Spomer was right behind her teammate with a career-high score of 9.775 to tie for sixth overall. Asturias scored a 9.725 to place ninth and Paz recorded a career-best 9.700 in the event to finish 10th. Washington's Lauren Rogers and Ruby Engreitz scored a 9.875 to tie for first place in the floor exercise.

Cal opened Sunday's meet on the vault, scoring a 48.075. Sophomore Dallas Crawford paced the Bears in the event with a score of 9.700 to place sixth overall. O'Brien registered a score of 9.650 to place eighth, while junior Arla Rosenzweig scored a 9.625 to finish ninth. Rogers and McKenzie Fechter of Washington tied for first place on the vault with a score of 9.800.

Asturias led Cal on the uneven bars with a career-high score of 9.825 to place third overall in the event. The Bears, who recorded a team score 46.425, also saw Crawford post a mark of 9.775 to tie for sixth overall. Washington's Ruby Engreitz took home first place on the bars with a score of 9.875.

Fechter took home the all-around title with a score of 39.225. O'Brien, in her second meet back competing in the all-around, recorded a score of 37.150.
