Charnell Price Takes 2 at Brutus Hamilton Open

April 27, 2012

BERKELEY - Sophomore Charnell Price won both the 100 and 200 meters, including a lifetime-best effort of 23.85 in the 200, to lead the Golden Bears at the Brutus Hamilton Open Friday at Edwards Stadium. The weekend events continue Saturday with the invitational portion of the meet.

Price's first victory came in the 100 when she was timed in 11.93, which was just off her fastest mark of the season - 11.87 - set in Tucson on March 31. About an hour later, she blazed to victory in the 200 meters. Her time of 23.85 was more than half a second ahead of runner-up Kayla Fisher-Taylor of New Mexico and moved her into eighth on Cal's all-time list. Price already ranks No. 4 on the Bears' performer chart in the 100 with a best of 11.68 posted last spring.

In addition to Price, senior Emani Truluck prevailed in the women's 100-meter hurdles in 13.82, and junior Derek White claimed the men's discus at 177-9.

Linda Oseso placed third in the women's hammer with a top throw of 191-8, the third straight meet she has surpassed 190 feet. Amy Haapanen, a volunteer assistant coach for the Bears, won the competition with a throw of 214-4.

In the men's hammer, Scott Esparza improved his PR to 194-7 in a runner-up finish, which fell just two inches shy of entering Cal's all-time top-10. In addition, Stephen Burke (172-6) and Chijoke Nwuzi (166-2) both set lifetime bests in the event.

Sullivan Parker bettered his previous season-long mark by nearly two feet with a mark of 54.8.00 in the men's shot put to take second place.

Sophomore Juliana Green had a 10-second improvement in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing fifth in 11:27.37, which moved her to seventh all-time at Cal. Freshman Chris Kigar also lowered his PR by eight seconds in the men's race to 9:28.10.

Jere Summers, competing unattached and a graduate of Berkeley High School, won the women's discus in 190-0, a PR that makes her the No. 9 performer in the United States this season.

Saturday's events at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's long jump, while competition on the track gets underway at 12:40 with the women's 100-meter hurdles.
