BERKELEY -
On a day when the Golden Bears honored their Hall of Fame coach with the annual Brutus Hamilton Invitational, Cal posted a number of impressive marks that rewrote many of the school's top-10 lists. Among the notable achievements were a lifetime best by Angelica Weaver in the 400-meter hurdles, a 7-foot clearance by Harrison Steen in the high jump and a 20-second PR by Taylor Bryson in the 1500 meters.
Weaver posted a big improvement in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing comfortably in front in 58.37. The time puts her third on Cal's all-time performer chart and is the fastest for a Golden Bear since the 2004 season. The 2011 USA junior champion in the 400 hurdles, Weaver's previous top time was 59.13 set back on March 31 in Tucson, Ariz.
Harrison Steed joined the ranks of 7-foot high jumpers with the Bears with his winning clearance of 7-0.25. The redshirt-freshman owns a lifetime best of 7-2.50 from high school, but missed last season with a hip injury and is just now rounding into form. Brian Carmichael, who won the Big Meet high jump at 7-2.25, was second at 6-11.00.
Bryson ran her fourth PR this spring with a winning time of 4:20.81 in the Marilyn Davis 1500 meters, a 20-second improvement from her previous attempt at the distance. The time places her sixth on the Bears' all-time performer chart. In addition, Bryson has set lifetime bests in the 800 and 5000 meters and the 3000-meter steeplechase in 2012, ranking among the top 25 nationally in the 5K and steeple.
Cal or former Cal runners prevailed in each of the first five events on the track. The women's 4x100-meter relay began the streak when the quartet of Dash Oliver and Chad Jones followed with a win in the Eddie Hart 4x100 relay in 40.54, also a season best.
Emani Truluck posted her second-fastest all-time mark in claiming the women's 100 hurdles in 13.62, followed by Chad Jones' PR in the Tom Moore 110 hurdles. Jones came from behind n the last 10 meters and out-leaned De'Vron Walker of New Mexico to win in 14.51.
Finally, former Golden Bear Alysia Montano, a three-time USA champion in the 800m who finished fourth in the event at the 2011 World Championships, set a meet record in the women's 400 meters. Her time of 52.16 was just 0.07 off her PR and bettered the previous invitational mark of 53.58 set by Stanford's Nashonme Johnson in 2004.
Price, who won both the 100 and 200 meters at Friday's open meet, was fifth in the 100 Saturday, but improved her PR to 11.67, which ranks fourth on Cal's all-time performer list.
Kamara sneaked into the Bears' top 10 with a PR 23.91 in the women's 200, which was good for fourth place on the afternoon and No. 9 on the school performer list.
Triple jumpers Amanda Hunter and Aziza Baker went 1-2 with lifetime-best performances. Hunter won in a wind-aided 41-9.25, while Baker was second at 41-8.75. Hunter had a top legal mark of 41-1.50, which puts her in a tie for ninth all-time at Cal. Baker moves into seventh on the school list.
Both of Cal's women's pole vaulters set PRs during the morning competition. Sophomore Nicole Larson cleared 12-11.50, two inches higher than her mark from the Stanford Invitational three weeks ago. The height puts her in a tie for seventh on the Bears' all-time performer list. Freshman McKenzie Landry finished at 11-11.75, an eight-inch improvement from the Big Meet.
Cal's top three finishers in the women's 800 all established lifetime bests, led by Arielle Stevenson's 2:09.14. Sydney Gray was clocked in 2:09.45, while Dynasty Gammage had a time of 2:12.39.
Former Golden Bear Ryan Young, now competing for Nike, won the men's javelin with a best effort of 240-9. The school record-holder in the event, Young also claimed the javelin at the 2011 Brutus Hamilton Invitational with a meet-record 247-2.
Leoule Degfae of Virginia Tech prevailed in the Don Bowden Mile with a time of 4:05.17. Cal freshman Matt Carpowich came on strong down the stretch to take second in 4:05.82, while fellow freshman Chris Walden was fourth in 4:06.86.
One other meet record feel in the men's 400 meters when Stanford's Amaechi Morton broke his own mark with a winning time of 49.43.
