STANFORD, Calif. - Collin Jarvis and Taylor Bryson ran two of the fastest 5000-meter races in school history and Nicole Larson won the women's pole vault with a personal-best effort on the first day competition at the Stanford Invitational Friday.

Jarvis, a sophomore who redshirted last year, finished 17th in his section of the men's 5000, but his time of 13:42.31 put him fourth on Cal's all-time performer list with the best mark for the Bears in five years. The effort was more than a minute ahead of his previous PR posted as a true freshman in 2010.

In addition, Maxime Chevee set a personal best with his time of 14:07.44 in a separate section of the men's 5000.

Bryson, meanwhile, also moved into the fourth slot on the women's performer chart with her time of 16:05.72, well ahead of her old PR of 16:50.76 from last March. Friday's showing produced the best outdoor mark for a Cal woman since 1997 (Deborah Maier ran 15:29.24 indoors in February). Bryson's time came just over a month after she ran a lifetime best of 2:09.05 in the 800 meters at the Cal Outdoor Opener.

Larson improved her all-time best by two inches in her victory in the women's pole vault. She and Diamara Planell Cruz tied with clearances of 12-9.50, but Larson picked up with win based on fewer misses.

Running late Friday night, Matt Miller finished 21st in his section of the men's 10,000 meters, but his PR time of 29:30.92 shot him up to fifth on Cal's all-time list with the best mark by a Cal runner since Yosef Ghebray set the school record in 2009.

In the women's long jump, Malaina Payton established an outdoor PR of 20-2.50 in her third-place showing. Her previous outdoor best came in 2010 when she set a Cal freshman record of 20-0.25, while she went 20-5.75 earlier this year during the indoor season.

Emani Truluck claimed her 100-meter hurdles heat in 13.84 to qualify for Saturday's final.

San Francisco State Distance Carnival
A handful of Golden Bears also competed at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival Friday where they picked up three victories - Arielle Stevenson in the women's 800 meters and Kelsey Santisteban in the women's two-mile race.

Carpowich held off Northern Arizona's Bahlbi Gebreyohanns to win by just over a second, 14:19.33 to 14:20.76, in the 5K race.

Stevenson came across the line in a crowded finish in 2:13.08, while Santisteban led a 1-2-3 Cal showing with her mark of 10:48.96. Laura O'Neill was second in 10:49.95, while Hillary Hayes took third in 11:03.93.
