SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - No. 1 Cal (350-361 - 711, +11) claimed the second position on the leader board after 36 holes of play Saturday at the Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State. Cal will begin Sunday's third and final round at the par-70, 6,615 yards Pasatiempo Golf Club nine shots behind UCLA (341-361 - 702, +2).
"UCLA was playing great and we just needed to keep them within striking distance," associate head coach Walter Chun said. "Nine shots can be made up in a blink of an eye. Hopefully, we'll get a good night's rest and give it our best shot tomorrow."
Despite a field that features five of the nation's top 10 teams there were no teams broke par on a day in which the winds picked up significantly during the afternoon when the 11-over par team scores for the second 18 holes by the Golden Bears and the Bruins equaled the best in the field.
"The guys played great, and they played hard all day," Chun added. "We had a tough start but then made some birdies. We knew coming into this event that it would be a tough grind out here with these conditions. But our guys just kept their head up and kept plugging away, and they did a fantastic job of that."
Max Homa (67-73 - 140, E) and James Yoon (T17th, 71-72 - 143, +3), Brandon Hagy (T31st, 73-72 - 145, +5), Walker Huddy (T41st, 72-75 - 147, +7) and Joël Stalter (T41st, 76-71 - 147, +7).
Cal was playing without regular lineup member Michael Weaver for the second straight event. Weaver is expected to rejoin the lineup for the Pac-12 Championships after missing the last two events (ASU Thunderbird Invitational, Western Intercollegiate) to prepare and become the first current Cal golfer to ever play in the Masters.
Cal has won a school-record eight of 10 tournaments in 2012-13 and is only two victories shy of the unofficial NCAA season-record win total of 10 established by the 1985-86 Oklahoma State squad. Cal has won 14 of its last 24 tournaments overall dating back to the beginning of the 2011-12 campaign and finished in the top five in all 24.
Sunday's third and final round is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. PT.
