BERKELEY – Cal alum and Bear Backer Deanne Krenz has an impressive resume as a fan of her alma mater. The first time she attended a Cal football contest was the 1991 Big Game. She claims to have caught “Blue and Gold Fever” during the 1993 Big Game when the Golden Bears recorded a convincing 46-17 victory over the Cardinal on The Farm. Krenz has been to three bowl games and numerous Cal Athletics events since. She's traveled the world and exchanged “more chants of Go Bears than I can count.”
But following Cal's practice on Wednesday she had a unique opportunity to do something she had never done before when she was introduced to the Bears and led them in an enthusiastic rendition of Bear Territory – the team's signature post-victory chant.
“It was an awesome experience being down on the field in this gorgeous stadium and giving them the big chant knowing they're heading down to USC not long from now,” Krenz said. “I hope they can take that momentum with them and beat those Trojans.”
“Our team really enjoyed having Deanne at practice and leading us in Bear Territory,” senior defensive tackle Austin Clark said. “We really appreciate fans like Deanne who are with us through thick and then.”
Krenz was also presented with two University Club tickets to this year's Big Game and a bag of Cal gear by head coach Sonny Dykes while Deputy Director of Athletics/CEO Solly Fulp told Cal's players that “she's one of the loudest Cal fans I've ever heard” when he introduced Deanne to the team.
“I was inspired by how loud Deanne was cheering for our football team until there was no time left on the clock,” Fulp said. “Deanne represents the loyal and passionate Cal alums that are very proud of their University's excellence in both academics and athletics.”
“I love my Bears and wanted to thank them for all the hard work they have done,” Krenz said. “I wanted to let them know that there are fans like us that are out there day in and day out. Even if we're not at Memorial Stadium, Bear Territory is everywhere. I have said 'Go Bears' to more Cal fans out there than you can imagine.”
