No. 11 Cal Narrowly Misses Upset of No. 7 Texas Tech

BERKELEY, Calif. – With a pair of high-throttle offenses and. unyielding defenses, the match was exactly what you would expect from two of best teams in the country, but ultimately it was Texas Tech who came away the victor after 109 minutes of play Friday afternoon on Goldman Field. The No. 7 Red Raiders scored in the final seconds of overtime to defeat the No. 11 Golden Bears, 1-0.

“I have to give credit to Texas Tech because it comes to a magical moment oftentimes between two great teams,” said California head coach Neil McGuire. “They had theirs. We didn't have ours.”

Texas Tech earned a corner kick in the final minute of play, sending Alli Murphy to take it. Murphy threw it into a cluster of players but found the head of Janine Beckie, who had eight shots on the afternoon. Beckie launched it toward the center of the goal to deal Cal the loss.

“We knew that was the set piece that would hurt us. We dealt with it three or four times, but we didn't deal with it at the right time,” McGuire said. ““We'll rue the day for that because ultimately we walk away from this game thinking we should have won.”

The Bears dominated most of the game, outshooting the Red Raiders 4-1 before halftime and then improving to 12-7 after the end of regulation. Heading into overtime, it was Texas Tech who gained the high ground, limiting Cal to no shots in the first overtime period while putting up three. Unfortunately for the Bears, who had three shots in the second overtime period, the Red Raiders had just one shot, but it was all they needed.

Freshman goalie Emily Boyd (5-1) registered two saves suffered her first loss of the season, while Red Raider keeper Lauren Watson earned her sixth win with four saves.

Next up for the Bears is a rematch against No. 24 Santa Clara Sunday at 3:30 p.m., televised live on the Pac-12 Networks. Cal won the first meeting this season 2-1 in overtime on a successful penalty kick by Lorin Hom.

It was a clash of the top 10, and I think both teams showed it. Texas Tech was fantastic. They played a very, very challenging style for us to deal with.

We were able to solve their pressure and attack their weak side of the field. We wanted 2 v. 1 opportunities and maybe even 1 v. 1 opportunities and I think we got that with Kelly (Fitzgerald) and with (Samantha Witteman), we just couldn't execute.

The loss is Cal's first of the season, and the first time the Bears have been shut out.
This is Cal's first loss to a Top 10 team since No. 2 UCLA in October last season.
This was Cal's first double overtime game of the season.
