Starr Advances in All-American Qualifying

The 33rd-ranked Starr – who is seeded ninth-16th in qualifying singles – opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over USC's 61st-ranked Meredith Xepoleas in the round of 128. She followed that with a win over Mississippi's 57th-ranked Arianne Hartono, 7-6(5), 6-1, in the round of 64. Starr takes on Vanderbilt's 49th-ranked Frances Altick at 11:45 a.m. PT in Wednesday's round of 32.
Along with Manasse, Starr has already claimed a spot in main draw doubles, which also begins on Thursday.
Cal sophomore Karla Popovic also began Tuesday in qualifying singles. But the 64th-ranked Bear fell to Boston College's 90th-ranked Lexi Borr in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Moving to the back draw's round of 32, Popovic defeated New Mexico's Emily Olivier in another three-set match, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. In the round of 16, Popovic plays Arkansas' 96th-ranked Shannon Hudson at 4 p.m. PT on Wednesday.
Competing in qualifying doubles, Fabikova and Popovic – seeded third and ranked 24th – lost in an upset to Oklahoma State's 36th-ranked Viktoriya Luskova and Carla Tur Mari, 8-1, in the opening round of 32. The Bears next play on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. PT in the back draw round of 16 against Mississippi's 41st-ranked duo of Natalie Suk and Mai El Kamash.
