Cal-Carroll Postgame Quotes
California Head Coach Cuonzo Martin
How would you evaluate Ivan Rabb's performance?
“I thought he did a good job. I'll have to watch film, but I thought a couple times Ivan could have taken tough shots with the double on him. I've told him sometimes you'll force shots when the double team hits you just to be aggressive and assertive. He's a very willing passer but makes good decisions with the basketball. I also thought we should have given him the ball a little more even if we have to force the pass. Don't make him get the ball. We talked about it a little during timeouts in the huddle. We want to put him in tough spots so he can move with the ball, come down with pressure on him and make decisions. I thought we could have gotten it to him a little more.“
Did you think the freshmen were nervous?
“No, I really don't think those guys come off like that, because they're sound students of the game. Again, I go back to the fact that even though this is a different level and the competition will get a little tougher as we move on, they've played in a lot of gyms – USA Basketball and McDonalds All-American – so they've seen that stage before. But for me it's just about those guys understanding how hard you have to play at this level. And I think they will understand that when they feel it.”
Senior Guard Tyrone Wallace
What was the objective for tonight's game?
“I think we just wanted to come out here and play as hard as we can, compete on both ends of the floor, defend, rebound and play hard. I thought we could have done a better job on the defensive end - several breakdowns, sky it up on some shots, and communicate more. But it was a good win. Any win is hard to come by and I think we did a good job.”
Freshman Forward Ivan Rabb
How did you feel about the atmosphere tonight?
“I was happy to see all the fans out there supporting us for our first game. I think we both did pretty well tonight. Obviously, we want to continue to grow as a team, but overall tonight was a decent night. It felt a little different because we had a lot of eyes on us. Everyone wants to see us do well. I was just happy that we had so much support tonight.”
Freshman Forward Jaylen Brown
How did you feel about the atmosphere tonight?
“I was excited to see the fans, awesome to start our collegiate career. I know I had a great time.”
