Four Golden Bears Play On Sunday Night Football; Goff Makes NFL Debut
BERKELEY – The spotlight was on former Cal football players during both afternoon and evening action during Week 11 of NFL action Sunday. Four former Golden Bears played in Washington's 42-24 home victory over Green Bay on Sunday Night Football after the bright lights had been on Jared Goff just hours earlier when he made his NFL debut and first start hours earlier.
DeSean Jackson contributed four catches and 51 yards receiving including a 17-yard touchdown reception while Maurice Harris had one grab for 14 yards in the Redskins' victory. Aaron Rodgers completed 26-of-41 passes for 351 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for the Packers while running for another 33 yards on three carries, while Richard Rodgers caught four passes for 28 yards. Nick Sundberg (Washington) and Trevor Davis (Green Bay) are on active 53-man rosters for the Redskins and Packers, respectively, but did not play.
Goff completed 17-of-31 for 134 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Los Angeles' 14-10 home loss to Miami in his first NFL action after not playing in the first 10 games of his rookie NFL campaign. Goff was selected No. 1 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft last April by the Rams. The Dolphins scored 14 fourth-quarter points after trailing Goff and the Rams, 10-0.
Chris Conte also had a huge interception for the second consecutive game Sunday to help his Tampa Bay squad win a second straight contest. After a 20-yard first-quarter pick six against Chicago last Sunday, this time Conte denied Kansas City a fourth-quarter touchdown by picking off Alex Smith in the Bucs' end zone and returning the ball a career-long 53 yards. Conte's interception set up what would eventually be Tampa Bay's winning touchdown to put the Bucs ahead 19-10 in an eventual 19-17 victory. He also finished with six tackles.
L.P. LaDouceur extended his consecutive games played streak to 182 straight in Dallas' 27-17 home win over Baltimore that improved the Cowboys' league-best record to 9-1.
Ron Rivera (head coach) and Richard Rodgers Sr. (assistant defensive backs/safeties coach) coached their defending NFC champion Carolina squad to its third win in the last four contests after a 1-5 start in a 23-20 victory over New Orleans on Thursday night to begin the week's action.
Others to play for winning teams Sunday included Bryan Anger (Tampa Bay), Lorenzo Alexander (Buffalo) and Marvin Jones (Detroit) with the Lions' victory keeping Detroit tied for first in the NFC South. Justin Forsett is also a member of the Lions' 53-man roster but was not active for Sunday's content.
Tyson Alualu (Jacksonville), Chris Harper (San Francisco), Cameron Jordan (New Orleans), Mychal Kendricks (Philadelphia), Brian Schwenke (Tennessee) and Bryce Treggs (Philadelphia) saw action for losing squads Sunday. Harper made his first two catches of the season for 35 yards and his first two for the 49ers. Daniel Lasco is also on New Orleans' 53-man roster but was not active in the Saints' loss.
Alex Mack (Atlanta) was Cal's lone active former Cal player with a bye.
Five former Cal players – Keenan Allen (San Diego), C.J. Anderson (Denver), Brandon Mebane (San Diego), Jordan Rigsbee (Carolina) and Shane Vereen (New York Giants) – are on injured reserve.
Cal currently has 28 former players on active NFL rosters including the five players on injured reserve as well as four on practice squads in Deandre Coleman (Buffalo), Kenny Lawler (Seattle) and Darius Powe (New York Giants).
Another Cal rookie Stephen Anderson will be in the spotlight when his AFC South-leading Houston squad will face AFC West-leading Oakland in Mexico City on Monday Night Football to wrap up this week's action.
