Cuonzo Martin Postgame Quotes

How relieved were you when that first free throw at the end rimmed out?
Very. I have been in these situations before down the stretch. It is a good thing to come out on the winning side but you know games are never over, especially when you have a guy like Andrew Andrews and so many talented freshmen. These types of games are never over until the buzzer sounds.

What happened in the last two to three minutes that allowed Washington to get back in it?
Teams make plays. It never fails. You get a time like that at home and they make plays. We gave up a couple of threes in the corner. When you miss free throws, they get their heads up. If you have a 10-point lead it has to go to 15. You can't miss free throws. They make plays. It changes the ball game. It changes the momentum and that is what happened.

How difficult was it to watch from the sideline and watch those free throws rim out time and time again?
I've seen it before. I've seen it pretty much all year. Again, you're up 10 in that situation. We have struggled all year from the free throw line. That I am not surprised with. In most cases, down the stretch our guys usually put it in the rim.

Finally getting your first conference road win. Does that mean anything this late in the season?
It is always good. You always want to get better later. That's what we have been doing. We have been playing better basketball later and that is always a good sign. We have to continue to grow and get better, make free throws, do the little things, be consistent, not have 16 turnovers. It is a part of it.

Can that do anything confidence wise for your guys?
I don't think our guys lack confidence in road games. They understood that every road game we lost in league play we did a poor job executing, making free throws, and turning the ball over. So it wasn't necessarily that we were overwhelmed by the opposing teams' talent. Once we figured out those things we can control, then we will be okay. Now, when you watch Washington, 16 turnovers is not a bad thing because of how they play and defend. You have to be able to make one-on-one plays against Washington. If you can't make one-on-one plays, it is going to be a long night.

I am assuming you are pleased with second half turnovers?
We did a better job in the second half but it is an easy thing to say but when they pressure, they have length, they stretch you out, they make you do things that you don't do in practice. You have to make one-on-one plays and that is not an easy thing if you don't have multiple, traditional guys that can do that.
