BERKELEY --- Freshman
Mia Corbin scored the first two goals of her collegiate career and senior
Arielle Ship nearly tied a 27-year old assist record in No. 20 California's 3-0 Pac-12 opening victory over Oregon State on Friday afternoon at Goldman Field.
The Golden Bears (8-2) improved to 5-4-1 in conference openers under head coach
Neil McGuire (since 2007) and 6-0 at home this season with its fifth Berkeley shutout of the year.Â
"With us starting our Pac-12 schedule, it's important that you start out strong and I feel we did that," McGuire said. "Oregon State is a great team and they have had some great results so far this season. We knew that they would come out organized and committed so I'm proud of the girls."

Ifeoma Onumonu opened the scoring for Cal in the 32nd minute after Ship sent a through ball from the left side to front of the goal for Onumonu, who smoothly put it home off on one touch.
As impressive as Onumonu's fourth goal of the year was, Corbin quickly stole the show less than a minute later. After Ship passed the ball off to Corbin, the newcomer dazzled the crowd with a fake-right-shoot-left score.
Ship sealed her helper hat trick in the 68th minute after drawing multiple defenders to the middle of the box and dishing to Corbin, who sealed the final margin with a shot that beat OSU goalkeeper Bella Geist to her left and barely hit the inside of the post.
"We've been waiting for it all season. It was a great day and we were glad to get out here and dominate," Corbin told Pac-12 Network after the match.
Corbin followed Ship's lead from Cal's last match vs San Francisco by becoming the second Bear this year to score multiple goals in one game. Ship, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year, came one assist shy of tying Joy Biefeld's single-game assist record of four, set nearly 27 years to the day on September 24, 1989.
