No. 17 Cal Hosts Washington Pac-12 Schools

BERKELEY --- No. 17 California women's soccer will wrap up its season-long five-game home stand with a pair of Pac-12 contests against the league's representatives from the Evergreen State. The Golden Bears will take on the University of Washington on Friday afternoon and host Washington State in a Sunday morning matinee. Fans can follow the action on Twitter @CalWomensSoccer as well as tracking Live Stats and tuning into Pac-12 Network for both games.
LAST TIME OUT
Cal won its third straight match and seventh in its last eight after shutting out Oregon State 3-0 at home last Friday. Freshman Mia Corbin notched her first two career goals and senior Arielle Ship recorded an assist hat trick to lead the Bears to victory.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON
Washington has lost three straight contests - including its conference opener vs Utah - after going unbeaten (5-0-1) in its previous six. UW's Shannon Simon currently leads the team in scoring (4 G, 8 Pts) while four Huskies share the team lead in assists. Goalkeepers Sarah Shimer (6 matches, 495 mins) and Kaylyn Smith (5 matches, 425 mins) have provided joint coverage for the Washington defense. Shimer has a 0.55 GAA, 3 goals allowed an a 3-1-0 record while Smith has logged a 1.06 GAA, 5 goals allowed and a 1-2-1 mark.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE
Washington State will face Stanford on Thursday before taking on the Bears Sunday in Berkeley. WSU entered Pac-12 play with a 0-1 loss to Colorado on September 23 after posting a 5-2-1 non-conference record, which included a win over then-No. 13 Santa Clara. The Cougars are led by Morgan Weaver's six goals and 12 points while Kaitlyn Johnson paces the team with four helpers. Ella Dederick has taken the majority of Washington State's minutes in goal and has recorded a 0.79 GAA in her nine games.
TRIPLE DOUBLE
For the second consecutive season, the Pac-12 Coaches have predicted that Bears will finish the regular season in third place. Reigning conference champion Stanford was selected to repeat atop the league standings, with USC picked to finish second. Trailing Cal in the Coaches Poll were UCLA, Arizona, Washington, Washington State, Arizona State, Utah, Colorado, Oregon State and Oregon.
RANKINGS
In addition to Cal's No. 17 ranking from the NSCAA, the Bears are currently ranked No. 24 by Soccer America, No. 17 by Hero Sports, No. 20 by TopDrawerSoccer and No. 27 in the last NCAA RPI poll.
JUMPING ON THE SHIP
Senior Arielle Ship, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year and first-ever from Cal women's soccer, is primed to lead the Bears again in 2016. A NSCAA All-American and All-Pac-12 First Team selection last year, Ship has already picked up a few honors early this season: MAC Hermann Trophy watch list selection; No. 19 ranked player on TopDrawerSoccer's first National Top 100 Players list; and a TDS Preseason Best XI Second Team honoree.
OPENING CONFERENCE PLAY
With its victory over OSU, Cal moved to 5-4-1 in Pac-10/12 openers, including a 2-1 record at home since head coach Neil McGuire took over in 2007.
CLIMBING THE LADDER
With 27 career goals - including the first in Cal's 3-0 win over Oregon State - redshirt senior Ifeoma Onumonu sits firmly in 6th place on Cal's all-time list for career goals, passing Winnie Burns (1985-88) and Andrea Rodebaugh (1984-87) so far this season. Five more scores will put her at 32 for her career and ino the top five all-time in Golden Bear history, passing Erika Hinton (1990-93). Entering the season, Onumonu scored a career- best 11 goals in 2012, eight in 2013, one in an injury-plagued 2014 and three last season. Ship is reaching for the top of this list as well, with 22 career goals (0 Fr./4 So./14 Jr./4 Sr.) entering this weekend.
STOP AND SHINE
Junior Emily Boyd is also making a play for standing in the Cal all-time record books. The Bears' starting goalkeeper - whose seven shutouts are 4th in the nation - has 22 career clean sheets to her credit and sits solely in 3rd place all-time at Cal, ahead of Emily Kruger (2010-13; 20.3), Mary Harvey (1983-86; 20) and Ashley Sulprizio (2002-05; 20). Boyd blanked four opponents in 2014 as a freshman and logged a career-best 11 shutouts last year as a sophomore. Boyd has also reached the top five all-time at Cal in saves: her 160 stops place her 4th all-time, passing Harvey (62 as a freshman, 76 as a sophomore, 22 as a junior).
CONFERENCE AFFILIATION
Outside of its Pac-12 Conference slate, Cal faced opponents from four other leagues during the 2016 season - the Big West, the West Coast Conference, the Big 12 and the Mountain West. Cal posted a .500 or better record against each league: Big West - 2-0 (W: Cal Poly & UC Davis); West Coast Conference: 2-2 (W: Portland & USF; L: Santa Clara & Saint Mary's); Mountain West: 1-0 (W: New Mexico); Big 12: 2-0 (W: Texas Tech & Texas).

Entering the 2016 campaign, head coach Neil McGuire had posted a record of 111-58-22 in his nine previous seasons in Berkeley. With the team's 8 wins so far this year, McGuire's total is up to 119, just 5 shy of tying the school record of 124 wins set by McGuire's predecessor, Kevin Boyd, from 1997-06.
BEAR TERRITORY
Cal is undefeated in its 6 home contests this season, winning four by shutout and outscoring opponents 15-1. With the first four wins coming by clean sheets, Cal opened a home schedule with that many shuouts for the first time since 1988. The Bears rattled off six shutout victories at home to begin the 1988 campaign.
