BERKELEY – A hard fought battle by No. 22 California was not enough on Sunday as the Golden Bears were upended by fourth-ranked Notre Dame 5-0 in Bloomington, Ind.

The Golden Bears (1-2-1) were aggressive in their second of a two-match road trip recording eight shots on goal, but it would not be enough. The Fighting Irish (4-0-0) scored early and the Bears were unable to recuperate.

"Notre Dame was excellent today, which allowed our staff to see the areas of improvement that are needed to move our team forward," said head coach Kevin Grimes. "We put a ton of energy and emotion into Friday night's match with Indiana. A 36 hour gap [between games] was simply not enough time to recover. This was a mistake in scheduling on my part and I won't put my players in this position again."

The Bears' goalkeepers combined for four saves, one by starter Jonathan Klinsmann and three by freshman Drake Callender, who played the entire second half.

Christian Thierjung and Jose Carrera-Garcia each tallied a pair of shots on goal to lead Cal.

Notre Dame opened with a goal by Evan Panken within 38 seconds, followed by Jon Gallagher in the 12', two goals by Thomas Ueland at the 39' and 60' and Mark Gormley in the 66'.

The Golden Bears will have a break from competition this week and will return to the field to host Nebaraska-Omaha on Sept. 16 at 4:30 p.m.
