Cal Ends Fall At Nationals, ASU

BERKELEY – California women's tennis will close out the fall with the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships starting on Wednesday in southern California and the ASU Thunderbird Invitational starting on Thursday.
The inaugural fall national tournament ends on Sunday and will take place at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells and at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert. Arizona State's tournament also ends on Sunday, at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Arizona.
Senior Karla Popovic, junior Olivia Hauger and freshman Anna Bright earned at-large berths to compete at fall nationals, with all three Bears playing singles. The 11th-ranked pair of Hauger and Popovic will also play in doubles at nationals.
At 8 a.m. PT in Wednesday's opening singles round of 64, the third-seeded and fifth-ranked Popovic will play the 17th-ranked Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss, while the 75th-ranked Hauger will face Kentucky's Justina Mikulskyte. At 10 a.m. PT, Bright will take on Duke's 11th-seeded and 54th-ranked Samantha Harris. In doubles on Wednesday, Hauger and Popovic will play Marta Perez Mur and Dani Wagland of Texas at 1:45 p.m. PT. All of Cal's opening matches on Wednesday will take place at the Marriott.

The Bears are coming off recent success, particularly in doubles, at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Stanford. Popovic and Hauger finished as the runners-up in the doubles main draw, while Hauger and Bright reached the singles quarterfinals.
Popovic, a singles All-American last season, has a 1-1 record so far this year with an impressive win over Florida's No. 15 Anna Danilina, 6-4, 7-6(4), in the Riviera ITA All-American Championships. The 75th-ranked Hauger, who has posted wins over Hawaii's No. 31 Petra Melounova and Winthrop's No. 55 Lauren Proctor, has a 9-3 singles record. Bright, who is 12-2 in singles, has impressive victories over Stanford's No. 44 Emma Higuchi and UCLA's No. 73 Jada Hart.
The Bears have won their share of titles at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Past Cal winners in Tempe include Denise Starr (she beat teammate Maegan Manasse in the 2013 top-flight singles final), Jana Juricova (2009 singles), Stephany Chang (2009 consolation singles), Marina Cossou (2007 singles) Marion Ravelojaona (2006 singles) and Jessica Shu (2005 singles).

A repeat title wasn't to be for Karla Popovic and Olivia Hauger, as the Cal duo dropped the doubles final at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Oct. 23 at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Seeded first and ranked 11th, the Golden Bears lost to the third-seeded Oregon pair of Shweta Sangwan and Alyssa Tobita, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(6). The result marked the first loss of the season for the Cal duo (7-1).
Hauger, seeded eighth, won three straight-set matches before falling to Stanford's top-seeded Melissa Lord, 6-2, 6-1, in the singles quarterfinals. Meanwhile the ninth-seeded Bright fell to the Cardinal's fourth-seeded Michaela Gordon, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarters.

In the preseason Oracle/ITA singles poll, senior Karla Popovic is ranked fifth, and junior Olivia Hauger is ranked 75th. In doubles, Popovic and Hauger are ranked 11th. New singles and doubles rankings will come out on Nov. 21, while the first team poll will come out on Jan. 3, 2018.
