BERKELEY – Sophomore Kathleen Baker, a two-time Olympic medalist who established a pool record in 200-yard backstroke in Cal's dual-meet victory over USC, has been named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month for January.
In a 165-135 win over the Trojans Jan. 27, Baker captured the 200 back in 1:53.66, which set the Spieker Aquatics Complex record as well as the Cal dual-meet record in the event. The previous mark of 1:53.94 was set by Elizabeth Pelton in 2014.
In addition to her 200 back win, Baker also claimed first place in the 200 individual medley against USC. A week prior, she won both the 100 and 200 back in a dual victory at Arizona State. Baker is the national leader in the 200 back with a best of 1:49.83 from the Georgia Invitational in December.
At the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Baker earned a silver medal in the 200-meter back and was a member of the gold-medal-winning 400-meter medley relay.
Baker has one more meet before the Pac-12 Championships later this month when the second-ranked Bears host No. 1 Stanford at noon Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. The dual will also be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.
