BERKELEY - California beat the heat and Northeastern when
Spencer Held slotted home a 79th-minute goal on Friday evening to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 win over the Huskies on Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium.
Jose Carrera-Garcia and
Samuel Ebstein set up the junior forward for his first goal of the year, as the Bears improved to 1-1.
Cal officials moved the game back one hour to 5:30 p.m. due to the sweltering heat in the San Francisco Bay Area. The high was 103 on Friday in Berkeley; the temperature was 99 at game time.
The first half was somewhat even. Cal outshot the Huskies, 7-5, though Northeastern put three of its shots on goal to two for Cal. The Bears wound up outshooting Northeastern, 15-10, for the game.
"The heat played a big part of the game, and we knew that the first half was going to be tough when the sun was shining," Held said. "But as soon as the sun started going down in the second half we started to dominate the game, and we were able to play our brand of soccer. It showed, and we were able to finish it off."
Ebstein began the scoring play, getting the ball to Carrera-Garcia, who collected and turned at the top of the Huskies' penalty area.
"I just made a traditional little run in behind the defense, and Jose did a little chip," Held said. "I took it past the defender and just slotted it home."
Cal sophomore goalkeeper
Drake Callender made six saves to earn the shutout.
"Despite very difficult conditions for both teams, it ended up being a really great game," Cal head coach
Kevin Grimes said. "We had contributions from so many players. That's the only way that we could have come out with the result that we did tonight."
The Bears continue their nonconference schedule when they play host to Creighton on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a match televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
