LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal junior
Collin Morikawa won all four of his matches to help Team USA to a 19-7 victory over Great Britain & Ireland in the 46th Walker Cup Match that ended Sunday at The Los Angeles Country Club. Morikawa was the first player to reach 4-0 on Sunday and became a part of history when his American teammates Doug Ghim and Maverick McNealy joined him later in the afternoon to make the three players the first trio to ever each post 4-0 records at the event.
"It's a dream come true," Morikawa added. "I've never really gone undefeated in one of these team events. I'm very pleased going 4-0, but I'm even happier for the team to get the win. This was big for our captain and I'm glad we could get the cup back home."
"Having Collin play well representing Team USA and Cal is amazing for both him and us," Cal's Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golfer
Walter Chun added.
After rolling to an 8 and 7 victory along with his playing partner Norman Xiong over GB&I's Harry Ellis and Alfie Plant that was the largest in the event's history on Saturday, the duo paired up again Sunday for a 2 up win over Connor Syme and Paul McBride. Morikawa and Xiong needed all 18 holes of their match on Sunday but finally clinched it when Syme and McBride bogeyed the 18th hole. Syme and McBride had taken advantage of two Morikawa/Xiong bogeys over a three-hole stretch on the back nine to get the match to all square for the third time before a 12-foot birdie putt by Xiong on the par-four 16th gave the Americans the lead for good. Syme and McBride led only twice after winning the first and third holes with birdies but both times followed with bogeys to give back the lead.
Morikawa rallied from an early two-hole deficit for a 2 and 1 victory over Ellis in his afternoon singles match that ended when Ellis bogeyed the par-four 17th. Morikawa fell two holes back after dropping the second and third holes with back-to-back bogeys before taking advantage of three Ellis bogeys over the next four holes (4, 5, 7) and adding his own birdie on the par-four sixth to take a two-hole lead. Ellis twice cut the margin to a single hole with his birdies on the par-four eighth and par-four 15th but a Morikawa birdie on the par-three 11th was enough to keep him in the lead until Ellis' final bogey.
"The Walker Cup is the biggest amateur event anyone can be in and to represent Team USA in Los Angeles was something very special," said the native of La Cañada Flintridge just outside of the City of Angels. "There were a lot of fans from Cal as well as La Cañada which made this week so much more special."
