Odysseas Masmanidis and the Bears host UC Davis on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Cal men's water polo team got its first test of the 2017 season but the No. 1-ranked Bears still left the Triton Invitational with a perfect record as a 14-7 win over Long Beach State and an 8-7 victory over UC Santa Barbara brought two days of competition in San Diego to a close.
With Sunday's wins, Cal improves to 4-0 on the season as the Bears now return to Berkeley for the 2017 home opener on Wednesday vs. UC Davis. That match will start at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast live by Pac-12 Networks.
Cal 14, Long Beach State 7
A good start offensively and a big game in the cage from
Kevin Le Vine helped the Bears pick up win No. 3 of the weekend with a victory over the No. 8-ranked 49ers.
Cal's offensive firepower showed up right away as goals by
Conor Neumann,
Odysseas Masmanidis and
Nick Bisconti pushed the Bears to a 3-0 lead right away.
Mikey Williams added his first goal of the 2017 season and
Safak Simsek also put one home to give the Bears a 5-2 advantage after one period.
The lead stood at 8-4 by halftime thanks to second-period goals from Simsek,
Luca Cupido and Neumann. That margin stayed steady at four thanks to a pair of goals from Masmanidis and another from
Pedro Stellet in the third period. And, Cal extended the lead in the fourth thanks to quality defense as the Bears added three more goals while holding the 49ers scoreless.
While Cal's attackers took care of business at the offensive end, Le Vine was busy providing plenty of defense in the Bears' own cage. The senior from El Cajon, Calif. made 17 saves, one coming on a 5-meter penalty shot, and added one steal to earn his second win of the season. Cupido and Masmanidis tied for match-high honors in scoring with three goals apiece, Simsek and Neumann each added two and Stellet,
Vassilis Tzavaras, Williams and Bisconti contribute one apiece.
Cal 8, UC Santa Barbara 7
A four-goal lead midway through the third period provided enough of a cushion to withstand a late charge by the No. 6 Gauchos as the Bears wrapped up their weekend in San Diego with a hard-fought win on Sunday afternoon.
Just as it did in the morning match against Long Beach State, Cal took the early lead against the Gauchos. Stellet scored the lone goal of the first period but the Bears added three more in the second as Tzavaras, Stellet and Masmanidis all found the range to give Cal a 4-1 lead at halftime.
Goals by Stellet and Tzavaras extended the advantage to 6-1 with just over six minutes left in the third period but UC Santa Barbara used the rest of the period to make a charge, scoring four of the next five goals to leave Cal up 7-5 heading to the fourth period. A goal by Tommy Fellner brought the Gauchos even closer, making it 7-6 Bears with 6:40 to play.
Needing a goal to stem the tide,
Connor Reid stepped to the forefront for Cal. Just 14 seconds after Fellner got UCSB within one, the senior from Lafayette, Calif. added an all-important insurance goal to push the lead to 8-6 with 6:26 left. Boris Jovanovic added a goal for the Gauchos with 1:45 left but Cal was able to make the lead stand up as the Bears ran out the clock to earn the one-goal victory.
Spencer Tagg got his second start of the weekend at goalkeeper and made 11 saves with one steal for the Bears. Stellet led the way on the scoresheet with three goals while Masmanidis and Tzavaras each added two and Reid scored his first of the season.
