Bears Get Offensive To Beat No. 5 Pacific
BERKELEY - Eight different players found the net and the No. 1-ranked Cal men's water polo team posted 15 goals for the second-straight match as the Bears worked for all four periods to earn a 15-11 victory over No. 5 Pacific on a sunny morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Faced with an opponent in Pacific that figured to be one of the toughest tests of the early season, Cal (6-0) came out swinging right away when it came to offensive production.
Luca Cupido got the day started, rising after a foul and connecting for the opening goal.
Fellow team captain
Pedro Stellet kept the momentum rolling, grabbing a pass from
Johnny Hooper and lobbing it past the Pacific goalkeeper to make it 2-0. A big save by
Kevin Le Vine sent the Bears in transition and
Nicholas Carniglia made the chance count, pushing the score to 3-0 at the end of one period.
Both offenses found a comfortable rhythm in the second period.
Nikos Delagrammatikas, Hooper,
Conor Neumann, Cupido and
Odysseas Masmanidis all connected, and after Cal built the lead to 5-1, the Bears held on to an 8-5 lead at halftime.
Pacific wasn't going away quietly though, and after a goal by Masmanidis put Cal ahead 9-6, back to back goals by Luke Pavillard brought the Tigers within a goal at 9-8. The flurry of offense from Pacific locked the Bears back in, and Neumann beat the keeper with a long-range strike to rebuild a little momentum.
Spencer Farrar added his name to the scoresheet and Cal led 11-8 at the end of three.
The goals kept flying in the fourth period but Pacific never got closer than it did in the third as Cal continued to build the lead. Cupido sealed the win with his fourth goal of the day, making it 15-10 Bears with 1:39 left. Pacific scored once more but the Bears ran the clock out to finish out the victory.
"We're getting better each game," Carniglia said. "People are learning each other. With everyone gone all summer and people playing together for the first time really, it's been really good that everyone is starting to learn each other. Every game is just getting that much better and everyone is that much more comfortable with what we're doing. It's going in a good direction, for sure.
Cupido led the Bears offensively with four goals. Masmanidis scored three, Hooper and Neumann each added two and Stellet, Farrar, Delagrammatikas and Carniglia ended the game with one apiece. Le Vine stopped 10 shots in the cage for the Bears, who stay at home next weekend to host Pepperdine and UC San Diego.
