Bears Bring In No. 8 Recruiting Class

Goalkeeper Anderson Headlines Cal Class Ranked Among The Nation's Best

BERKELEY  -  For the second time in the last three seasons, head coach Neil McGuire and the Cal women's soccer team are bringing one of the nation's top recruiting classes to Berkeley. Angelina Anderson (Danville, Calif.), Lily Arbabaraghi (Danville, Calif.), Ally Brecher (Alamo, Calif.), Mia Fontana (Burlingame, Calif.), Natalie Hueston (Newport Beach, Calif.), Kelyn McGuire (Danville, Calif.), Kaylee Nguyen (Irvine, Calif.), and Jadyn Shinn (Manteca, Calif.) all signed their National Letters of Intent as the NCAA opened its early signing period on Wednesday.

Ranked No. 8 in the nation according to TopDrawerSoccer.com, Cal's incoming class is headlined by Anderson, considered by many to be the top goalkeeper in her age group in the world. Anderson is currently in Uruguay, captaining the Under-17 United States' Women's National Team at the Under-17 FIFA Women's World Cup, and recorded a clean sheet in Wednesday's group stage opener vs Cameroon, making four saves for the shutout victory. Anderson was also named to the U.S. roster for the Under-20 FIFA Women's World Cup earlier this summer in France, along with soon-to-be Cal teammate, Abi Kim. Anderson and the Under-17 U.S. Women's National Team continue group play on Saturday, November 17, taking on defending Under-17 WWC champions Korea DPR.

Anderson is just one member of Cal's incoming class that brings significant national team experience to Berkeley. San Jose Earthquakes Development Academy products Fontana and Shinn have also been regular call-ins for the U.S. Youth National Teams. Fontana, a forward from Burlingame, was recently called into camp with the Under-19 USWNT, having spent time earlier this year with the Under-17s. Shinn, a midfielder from Manteca, was called into camp with the U-18 USWNT in October 2018 for their final domestic training camp of the year.

Along with experience for the national teams, the Bears' incoming class also brings a pedigree of success at the club and high school levels, contending for and winning championships in both the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and Elite Clubs National League (ECNL).

"We are excited to welcome this great group of player to our program," said head coach McGuire. "It is a talented group who have competed at a very high level of both international and club soccer. They enter Cal with a high academic pedigree, outstanding character, and a drive to help our team excel."

Cal's incoming class marks the program's second Top-10 recruiting class in the last three seasons. Cal's current sophomore class was ranked No. 3 in the Nation by TopDrawerSoccer entering college, with then-freshmen Emily Smith and Luca Deza collecting All-Pac-12 honors at the conclusion of their rookie seasons.
