Bears Win PAC 7s Championship

Cal Claims 6th Conference Title In Last 7 Years

BERKELEY — The Golden Bears won the PAC Rugby Conference 7s championship for the sixth time in seven years Sunday in front of a national television audience on Witter Rugby Field, defeating Arizona, 33-5, in the cup final to claim the title.

Senior Zachary Tavenner scored two tries against the Wildcats and was named Man of the Match for the cup final as California earned an automatic national postseason qualification for the second straight tournament and finished its autumn 7s schedule with a 17-0 record.

The Bears began championship Sunday at the PAC 7s with a 36-0 shutout of Arizona State. Freshman Henry Poon and sophomore Marcus Shankland each contributed two tries.

Arizona reached the cup final by defeating UCLA, 17-12. The Bruins went on to beat ASU, 10-7, to finish in third place at the PAC 7s.

In other results Sunday, Utah beat Stanford, 32-5, in the Shield Final and USC got past Oregon State,19-17, to win the Plate Final.

"We improved every single game going into final and that set us up for a successful outcome," said Tavenner.

"Extremely proud of the boys," said captain Nic Mirhashem. "The work ethic has been good and we're developing a sense of purpose to carry on the legacy of the Blue and Gold."

"Witter Rugby Field, there's no better place to play," added Elliot Webb. "A lot of work went into this event and we're grateful."

"I have two thoughts," offered head coach Jack Clark. "First, the fall 7s campaign was solid. Contesting three tournaments, and winning all three, matters. Importantly, I think we improved and we will need to pick up the 7s improvement in late spring. Secondarily, we are really grateful for all the energy and good work from all the individuals who helped to host our conference 7s championship. We are very appreciative."

The Rugby Bears return their focus to their academic studies as semester exams approach before the beginning of 15- a-side play, which kicks off in January to continue the 137th year of Cal rugby.
