BERKELEY – In the 46 seasons that women's basketball has been a varsity sport at Cal, more than 200 women have worn the blue and gold jersey with the words "California" stitched across the chest.
Only three have scored 2,000 career points.
Kristine Anigwe joined Colleen Galloway and Ashley Walker in that prestigious club on Sunday afternoon, scoring a game-high 26 points in Cal's 67-42 victory over CSUN.
The Bears' senior center/forward entered the matchup needing just seven points to reach the 2,000-point milestone. She accomplished that in less than four minutes, showing off the well-rounded game that has made her a three-time All-American and what head coach
Lindsay Gottlieb calls, "the best post player in the country on both ends of the floor."
Anigwe kicked off her scoring in the first possession of the game, draining a long jumper over reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Year Channon Fluker. Three possessions later, it was Anigwe posting up in the paint and finishing with a jump hook. The 2016 National Freshman of the Year then collected a pass from Receé Caldwell and finished through contact, completing the three-point play to reach the 2,000-point mark.
Anigwe is just the 20
th player in Pac-12 women's basketball history to amass 2,000 career points, but was quick to point out after the game that it's not a feat she has achieved alone.
"I'm blessed," said Anigwe, a three-time All-Pac-12 honoree. "I never imagined I would come here and score 2,000 points. It hasn't been easy and I'm grateful for everyone around me. I have amazing teammates and coaches. This 2,000 points isn't for me as much as it is for everyone that helped me become the player I am today."
Anigwe now has a chance to become just the 11
th woman in conference history to both score 2,000 career points and grab 1,000 career rebounds. The Phoenix, Arizona product currently ranks fifth in program history with 966 career rebounds, and is averaging 13.6 rebounds per game on the season.
Anigwe ended the game with her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 26 points and 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes of action. Defensively, Anigwe helped hold Fluker, the 2018 Big West Player of the Year and a fellow candidate for the 2019 Lisa Leslie Award, to just seven points and five rebounds on 3-12 shooting. Fluker entered the game averaging 16.9 points per game and 13.3 rebounds per game on the season and has 61 career double-doubles.
De'Jionae Calloway led the Matadors (4-5, 0-0 Big West) with 13 points while sophomore guard
Kianna Smith also scored in double-figures for the Golden Bears (7-0, 0-0 Pac-12). Caldwell dished out a season-high nine assists as the Bears ended the game with a season-high 20 assists on 28 made field goals.
Anigwe powered the Bears' offense in the first quarter, scoring Cal's first 12 points of the game. The game remained tight through the first period, with Cal leading just 20-19 after the first 10 minutes of play. The Bears built a comfortable 27-19 cushion on a 7-0 run midway through the second quarter, but CSUN was able to make up ground heading into the halftime as Anigwe went to the bench with three fouls. The Matadors scored seven points in the last 2:22 to put pressure on the Bears, cutting Cal's lead to 31-28 at the half.
Yet as has become custom this season, Cal put the clamps on CSUN in the second half. The Bears held the Matadors to just 14 points in the second half and held CSUN scoreless for the first nine minutes of the third quarter. The Matadors' 42 points are the fewest the Bears have allowed in any game this season and mark just the third time in the last three seasons that the Bears have held an opponent to fewer than 45 points.
The Golden Bears, ranked No. 15 in the latest AP Poll, will be back in action next Saturday, making the short drive to Moraga to face Saint Mary's. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT on Saturday, December 8. The Gaels are 5-2 on the season and have already faced three Pac-12 opponents, outlasting Washington State 70-64, before falling to a eighth-ranked Oregon State,89-56, and third-ranked Oregon, 79-55.
