Cal Opens Pac-12 Play Vs. USC, UCLA

BERKELEY – California women's tennis starts Pac-12 Conference play when it takes on No. 47 USC and No. 13 UCLA – each for the second time in two weeks – at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Golden Bears (4-4) host the Trojans (7-2) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and then play the Bruins (8-2) on Saturday at noon.
Admission is free for regular-season tennis at Hellman.

The Bears hope to reverse recent results from Los Angeles, where they lost to USC, 4-3, on Feb. 23 and fell to UCLA, 5-2, on Feb. 24. Overall, Cal is on a three-match losing streak. Meanwhile, the Trojans have won five straight, while the Bruins (who start Pac-12 play Friday at Stanford) have won four in a row. The SoCal teams were supposed to have opened conference play against each other last Friday, but that match was rained out.

Cal is not ranked in this week's Oracle ITA team poll, while USC is 47th and UCLA is 13th in those rankings. In last week's USTA College Top 25, the Bears were ranked 20th, while the Trojans were unranked and UCLA was ninth. The USTA poll comes out each Wednesday.
Four Bears are ranked in this week's Oracle ITA singles rankings: Junior Olivia Hauger (15-6) is 32nd, freshman Anna Bright (26-8) is 35th, senior Karla Popovic (1-2) is 63rd and freshman Julia Rosenqvist (9-4) is 68th. Rosenqvist earned the first ranking of her college career after upsetting Pepperdine's Ashley Lahey, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, last Saturday when the Wave was ranked 13th and, in the previous week, upsetting UCLA's then-73rd-ranked Terri Fleming, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Also currently in singles, USC's Gabby Smith is ranked 13th, while five Bruins are ranked in No. 8. Ena Shibahara, No. 41 Jada Hart, No. 46 Abi Altick, No. 104 Fleming and No. 118 Alaina Miller. In doubles, USC's Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes are ranked 43rd, while UCLA's Hart and Shibahara are ranked eighth, Fleming and Hart are ranked 22nd, Hart and Gabby Andrews are ranked 35th, and Andrews and Ayan Broomfield are ranked 36th.

Julia Rosenqvist upset a nationally ranked opponent for the second consecutive match, but No. 20 California wound up losing to No. 2 Pepperdine, 6-1, in a match delayed by rain last Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bear freshman defeated the Waves' 13th-ranked Ashley Lahey, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, at court-two singles in a match that ended under the lights at chilly Hellman.
Pepperdine clinched the victory over the Bears when the 48th-ranked Evgeniya Levashova beat Cal junior Maria Smith, 6-0, 6-3, at court-four singles to give the Waves a 4-0 lead.
Next Time
Cal plays Texas Tech in a nonconference match on March 13 and then the Bears return to Pac-12 play to host Colorado on March 16 and – in the last contest of a six-match homestand – Utah on March 17.
