BERKELEY - Maria Smith led a big turnaround for California as the 22nd-ranked Golden Bears routed No. 47 USC, 7-0, in both teams' Pac-12 opener on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Just two weeks ago in Los Angeles, the Trojans topped the Bears, 4-3, to start a three-match losing streak that Cal just snapped. As in the earlier meeting, Smith defeated USC's Madison Westby at court-four singles on Friday, though this time the Cal junior won in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3, and clinched a victory for the Bears.

"It's always great clinching for the team," Smith said. "We really worked hard over the last two weeks to come back after losing in L.A. I'm really proud of all the girls. We left it all out there, and we competed our hardest."

Smith also teamed with freshman Jasie Dunk to clinch the doubles point, as the pair beat Westby and Constance Branstine, 6-3, on court three. Earlier, the Cal pair of junior Olivia Hauger and freshman Julia Rosenqvist upset the 43rd-ranked duo of Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes, 6-1, on court one.
 
Freshman Anna Bright, ranked 35th in singles, quickly gave Cal a 2-0 lead when she topped Becca Weissmann, 6-2, 6-0, on court two. Freshman Vivian Glozman made it 3-0 when she bested Branstine, 6-2, 6-3, on court six before Smith settled things on court three.
 
The Bears played out the remaining matches, and the day ended when Rosenqvist ranked 68th, upset the 37th-ranked Gabby Smith on court one, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, to give Cal the 7-0 win.
