REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – Despite several weekends off from racing, the Cal men's rowing team showed no signs of rust, sweeping all of its races Saturday at the annual Stanford Invitational. The Golden Bears, who opened the 2018 spring campaign with a sweep at the San Diego Crew Classic, gained valuable experience racing on the their home course at Redwood Shores for the first time this season. Cal finished the day with head-to-head wins over No. 10 Wisconsin, Oregon State, Santa Clara, and Hobart.
"All of the crews raced well today and showed progress from a strong start to the season in San Diego," said associate head coach Scott Frandsen. "We tried a few different lineups for the two sets of races today and learned a lot about the different combinations. It is always good to get this experience on our home course and we will look to build upon these races when we race Washington and Stanford in the coming weeks. Thanks to Stanford for hosting a great Invitational regatta and to the other crews for making the trip to sunny California to race."
The Bears began the morning against Pac-12 rival Oregon State, besting the Beavers in the varsity, second varsity, and third varsity eights. Cal's freshman 8+ built on its strong showing earlier in the season at the San Diego Crew Classic with a win over the Santa Clara varsity eight. The Bears' fourth varsity eight also registered a victory over the third varsity eight from Hobart College.
After a break in the action, Cal opened the afternoon session with a battle between the Bears' freshman and fourth varsity eight boats, before the second varsity eight edged Big Ten power Wisconsin. The Bears' third varsity eight also picked up a victory over the Badgers while Cal's fifth varsity eight gained valuable experience and the junior varsity eight from Santa Clara. The Bears closed out the regatta while some impressive racing from the varsity eight. Ranked No. 1 in the latest USRowing Coaches' Poll, Cal's varsity eight earned an open-water victory over No. 10 Wisconsin.
The Bears will be back in action at Redwood Shores next Saturday for the annual Cal/Washington Dual. One of the richest rivalries in the history of collegiate rowing, the series dates back to 1903; Cal was won the Schoch Cup each of the last three years.
