Bears Medal In Lucerne

LUCERNE, Switzerland – Competition at the 2018 World Rowing Cup III wrapped up this weekend in Lucerne, Switzerland with three Golden Bears winning medals for their respective countries. Rosie Popa '14 won gold in the Australian four while rising seniors Sydney Payne and Dana Moffat both earned a spot on the podium in the women's eight. Payne helped the Canadian eight to a silver medal while Moffat and the United States won bronze in the third and final World Rowing Cup of 2018.

Popa's gold in the Australian four continued a successful summer of competition for the Golden Bear grad, who also took gold in this event at the World Rowing Cup II and won the Remenham Challenge Cup with the Australian eight at Henley.

Payne and Moffat, both members of Cal's NCAA champion varsity eight, medaled in their first major international competition with their senior national teams. A Toronto native, Payne won gold last summer in the Canadian eight at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships. Moffat, an Under-23 silver-medalist last summer in the U.S. eight, was recently named a Pocock CRCA First Team All-American for her performance this season.

Kara Kohler '14 narrowly missed out on a medal in the single sculls, finishing fourth in the A Final while representing the United States. Kohler improved upon her performance earlier this year at the World Rowing Cup I in Belgrade, Serbia, where she won the B Final.

Rising junior Maddison Brown competed in Australia's Under-23 eight, which finished fourth in its heat.

The international racing slate continues this month with Golden Bears slated to race at the upcoming World Rowing Under-23 Championships held July 25 to 29 in Poznan, Poland.
