Cal-Oregon Postgame Notes

  • With the 42-24 Oregon win, Cal now leads the all-time series, 40-39-2, with Oregon winning nine of the last 10.  
  • Cal's first scoring drive was its longest of the season in number of plays (15) and time elapsed (7:29). It ended with a Greg Thomas 25-yard field goal.
  • Cal's fourth-quarter scoring drive was its longest of the season in number of yards (97). The Bears also scored on a drive 90 yards in length in the second quarter, the second longest this season.
  • Cal has scored first in all four games this season.
  • Oregon entered the game allowing an average of 75.5 rushing yards per game. Cal ended the night with a total of 241 rushing yards.
  • Brandon McIlwain rushed for his second touchdown of the season in the second quarter, and it was Cal's longest run of the season (28 yards).
  • McIlwain became Cal's first quarterback to rush for over 100 yards in a game since Joe Kapp ran for 130 yards against Oregon in 1958. McIlwain finished with a career-high 123 rushing yards that were the most by a Pac-12 quarterback in 2018 on 15 carries.
  • McIlwain completed 11-of-21 passes for 128 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The completions, attempts and passing yards were all career highs.
  • In the fourth quarter, McIlwain completed a 45-yard pass to Ian Bunting. The play was both McIlwain's longest pass and Bunting's longest reception of their Cal careers
  • Evan Weaver ended the night with a career-high 14 tackles. He has collected double digit tackles in every game this year.
  • Jordan Kunaszyk forced his second career fumble that was recovered by Rusty Becker (first of his career) in the third quarter. Kunaszyk also totaled 11 tackles tonight for his third consecutive double-digit tackle contest.
  • Steven Coutts' 73-yard punt in the second quarter was a career best, tied for the seventh longest in school history, the longest punt by a Pac-12 player in 2018 and the third longest nationally. It was also the longest punt by a Cal player since Bryan Anger had punts of 75 and 76 yards against Stanford in 2008.
  • Patrick Laird garnered his 11th career rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Laird also threw his first career pass in the first quarter on a 14-yard completion to Vic Wharton III.
  • Vic Wharton III was Cal's leading receiver with six catches for 68 yards, including a long of 25 yards. All three were season bests.
  • Jordan Duncan caught his team-leading third touchdown reception.
  • Becker ended the night with a career-high six tackles.
  • Addison Ooms has now started the last 28 consecutive games, the only member of the Cal team to do so, and the most since Jared Goff started every game in his career (37 games, 2013-15).
  • Tonight's game marked the 500th game that play-by-play announcer Joe Starkey has called as the voice of Cal football on the Bears' radio broadcast. Starkey will be inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame this year.
  • Bunting and Traveon Beck made their first career starts at Cal, while Dario Longhetto made his debut with an onside kick attempt.
