California Head Coach Justin Wilcox
General comments:
"I think it's pretty clear. Offensively, it starts with turnovers. You can't turn the ball over that many times against a team like that. 14 points. We moved the ball well at times and had turnovers and missed opportunities. We had chances for shot plays, big plays and we didn't connect on them. We stayed in rhythm and were moving the ball. Whether it was QB run game, RPOs, drop backs, we were doing some things and then had the turnovers and missed opportunities. Two of the shots were turnovers. We had a one on one on a post that we missed and the guy intercepted it. Then we had a chance for a touchdown in the third quarter and same thing happened. Against a team like that, the margin for error is so much smaller. That's a really talented team and you've got to make those plays."
On the character of the team:
"They kept competing. Nobody quit. We don't have quitters. We've just got to play cleaner and we've got to take advantage of opportunities. The margin for error against a team like that with that much skill is small. So, if you turn the ball over or on defense we don't fit the run right or we miss a tackle, two runs go for 120 yards. People don't catch them. So, we've got to be cleaner. The tape will show it but our guys play hard, they compete, they play for each other and we can do some good things. We'll use this experience to learn from and they'll bounce back on Monday. It hurts. It feels like you got kicked in the gut. It sucks. But, there's no other way to do it. Come back on Monday and go to work."
On the response from the team going forward:
"I expect them to show up Monday ready to go. Everybody feels awful. You invest so much time and energy and when it doesn't go like you want it to go, it stings. You only get so many opportunities to go out and play, so it hurts and it should hurt. We'll learn from it. We've got a resilient bunch of guys and they'll come in Monday ready to practice. We did some good things. I know you don't think so but offensively we did some good things. You just can't turn the ball over and you've got to connect on some of those shot plays against a team like that. Defensively, that's an elite quarterback and we didn't play the run. The two long runs kill you. You make them earn some things throughout the game that might happen but there'll be positives to take away from this game and there'll be hard lessons. I expect them to take them all."
On the buzz of a game between ranked opponents:
"We're just trying to better than we were. We realized there was more buzz around this game and we want buzz around the games. That's a good thing. We weren't good enough tonight. I think what's more important, and we talked about this, is not focusing on the buzz but focusing on what it takes to play well. Not focusing on the bad things people will say tomorrow and focusing on what we need to do to get better. That's what the mentality is. I know it's out there and that comes with the territory. We want to play in big games and we can and will play better."
California Players
Brandon McIlwain, QB
On the offensive performance:
"We had a lot of opportunities. As a whole, we didn't operate how we wanted to. We missed some of our shots. You have to give credit to Oregon, they played extremely hard. We need to be able to capitalize and finish.
On takeaways after the loss:
"We will continue to have opportunities. There's obviously slot of mistakes we had that we need to work on and get better at. We need to keep working and not get done on ourselves. We need to use the good things as momentum and the bad as learning opportunities. So, I think we can really behind it and learn a lot from this."
On Cal's response after the team's first loss:
"I expect us to fight. We are a team that pride ourselves on being smart and tough, and that's being smart about fixing our mistakes, and continue to be tough, play tough, and never stop fighting. We never stopped fighting until the last play of the game. The offensive line was pushing as hard as they could. We had running backs running through people. We had receivers making great plays."
Jordan Kunaszyk, ILB
On general impressions of the defense:
"We didn't play to our expectations and standards. We practice to win and to be great, to be our best on every single play. We need to limit explosive plays and take the ball away. The effort was there, the execution wasn't. We just didn't play to our standards."
On takeaways after facing a tough team like Oregon
"We can compete with everybody. When you look at the scoreboard, it may look like Oregon out it on us. At the end of the day, we know we can compete with anybody. We know what kind of team we have, we are completely different from last year. So were going to continue to get better every single day. This one stings, but we'll continue to learn from it and get ready for Arizona."
Rusty Becker, DE
On general impressions of the defense:
"Looking at the silver lining, I believe we kept fighting as a defensive. Seeing that step up from last year brings me excitement for what's ahead for us."
Rusty Becker, DE
On facing a tough team like Oregon:
"Oregon came out ready to play. They are a great team. We know what our standards are, and we already working ahead. So, we'll learn from this tonight, and we're back in action tomorrow."
Oregon Head Coach Mario Cristobal
General Comments:
"I'm proud of our football team coming on the road. We worked really hard all week, coming off a hard loss, and they really took it upon themselves to get right to business. They attacked practices on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with a lot of passion. Coming on the road against a Top-25 and winning a football game is great. I'm really proud of them and happy for them. It's very well-deserved. Again, some imperfect football and definitely things we need to work on, but overall this was a really good team effort.
On team's response following loss to Stanford:
"This winter we switched where our motivation comes from. It's not external, it's internal. When you do that, no matter how tough the moment gets, there should be enough built in there to help propel you – to help dig yourself out when you're not feeling so well after a tough one. That came to the surface right away this week.
"We knew that coming on the road was going to be a tough deal. We knew it was going to be a challenge – they're a good football team. We really talked about playing with passion and eliminating the rollercoaster of emotions…. We knew we were going to completely understand what it's like to not worry about the scoreboard or the clock. We wanted to play every single down as hard as we could for 60 minutes."
On Herbert's performance
"You have to give a ton of credit to [Justin Herbert] and [Offensive Coordinator Marcus Arroyo]. Those two guys had a really good game plan. You're going to hear me say it every single week; Justin just continues to elevate his game. He sees the whole field. He's a great decision maker. We knew tonight was going to be a challenge because their defense really changes the picture on you. He had to make a lot of split-second decisions and he was on-point with 99 percent of them today.
On defensive performance:
"All these games are going to come down to being able to play as a team. In really critical moments the defense stepped up and did a great job. They
really helped change the ball game."
On Cal's running game:
"[
Brandon McIlwain] hit us on some big runs. They ran the ball a little better than most teams have run against us, but there's a give and a take as well. Overall our defense played a really strong game."
On snapping road losing streak in Pac-12 play:
"Last year when we went on the road in conference, I believe the average margin of defeat was 25 points, maybe more. I've only been here a year, so when we got on the locker room I didn't know if we were supposed to sing on the road. That's how foreign that feeling was. It's such a big moment for these guys. Tremendous respect for Coach Wilcox and his team. He does a tremendous job and that's one of the better coaches you'll find and he had his team prepared. But to come on the road and be able to do that, that's a monumental and powerful shift for our team and our program. It's been a while and we'll enjoy it for the plane ride back."
