Bears Outlasts Huskies in Sunday Shootout

Cal Completes Weekend Sweep With 79-70 Win Over Washington

BERKELEY – In a game where every point counted, three-time All-American Kristine Anigwe made her presence felt, finishing with 30 points and 18 rebounds as Cal topped Washington, 79-70, on Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears (12-5, 3-3 Pac-12) completed the weekend sweep with an impressive fourth-quarter performance, outscoring the Huskies (8-11, 1-6 Pac-12) 30-19 in the final frame.

Coming off a 29-point, 23-rebound outing on Friday against Washington State, Anigwe followed it up with one of her most efficient outings of the year, shooting a season-high 72.2 percent (13-18) from the floor in her third 30-point game of the 2018-19 campaign. The top rebounder in the nation this season, Anigwe added 18 rebounds on the day and extended her double-double streak to 18 in a row, the seventh-longest streak in Division I women's basketball history.

Amber Melgoza led the Huskies with 27 points and went a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arc.

Cal grad transfer Receé Caldwell scored in double-figures for the second consecutive game, finishing with 15 points on a 5-7 performance form the floor and 3-5 from beyond the arc. Freshman McKenzie Forbes added 10 points for the Bears off the bench while Asha Thomas flirted with a triple-double, finishing with nine points, seven rebounds, and a season-high eight assists.

No stranger to close games this season, Cal found itself in another back-and-forth affair on Sunday afternoon. Both teams opened the game shooting better than 50 percent from the field, in what quickly begame a point for point battle. The Huskies held an early advantage as they found their touch from beyond the arc, going five-for-eight from beyond the arc in the first quarter and finishing the game at 56.5 percent (13-23) from three on the afternoon.

But while the Huskeis hit from beyond the arc, Cal established its presence in the paint. Anigwe opened the game 4-4 from the floor and the Bears outscored the Huskies 20-8 in the paint in the first half.

Tied at halftime, Melgoza scored 10 of her 27 points in the third quarter alone to give Washington a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. However, Cal quickly regained momentum with a 12-3 run to start the final quarter, capped by a three-pointer by Caldwell that gave the Bears a seven-point lead. Caldwell matched her season-high with three made three-pointers, part of a 6-15 (40%) effort overall by the Bears from beyond the arc. Washington was able to get the score back within three after a three-pointer from Missy Peterson with 4:40 left to play, yet Cal's guards immediately countered with a 7-0 run, punctuated with a three from Thomas. Thomas now joins fellow Oakland-native Alexis Gray-Lawson as the only players in program history with 200 career three-pointers.

The Bears shot 8-11 from the floor overall in the fourth quarter and finished with seven assists and zero turnovers in the final 10 minutes of play.

The Bears will head back on the road next weekend, heading to the Rocky Mountains for matchups against Utah and Colorado. Cal faces off against Utah on Friday at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. before heading to Boulder for a 12 p.m. PT matchup next Sunday against the Buffs. Both games will be carried on Pac-12 Networks. Utah is off to an impressive 16-1 start to the season and has been receiving votes in both the AP Top 25 and USA TODAY Coaches' Poll. The Utes are 5-1 in Pac-12 play and are coming off a win over rival Colorado on Friday night. Cal won its lone matchup with Utah last season and will be looking for its first win in Salt Lake City since January 12, 2014, dropping its last two trips to the Huntsman by a combined 12 points.
