Joustra's Late Goals Propel Cal To Win
BERKELEY – All-American center
Kitty Lynn Joustra scored two pivotal goals in the fourth quarter and the No. 4 Cal women's water polo team fought off No. 11 Long Beach State 11-9 to wrap up the Cal Cup at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Sunday.
With the score tied 7-7, Joustra scored the first two goals of the fourth period to give the Bears a lead they would not relinquish. Junior
Hannah DeRose and sophomore
Brigit Mulder added late goals to put the game out of reach.
Joustra scored just 16 seconds into the fourth quarter and added another over a minute later to put the Bears in control.
"Kitty knows when to step up," Cal head coach
Coralie Simmons said. "You have to have athletes on your team that know how to win games, and she is teaching this team how to win games."
Senior
Rachael Lewin added a key steal with just over a minute left and sophomore goalie
Cassidy Ball made six saves for Cal.
Junior
Jackie Sanders scored a pair of goals for the Bears (3-0), who played the season-opening tournament without All-American and returning leading scorer
Emma Wright, who was traveling back from San Paolo, Brazil where she helped the Canadian National Team take the gold medal at the UANA Cup.
The Bears defeated No. 3 UCLA in an exhibition game earlier in the day 8-7 in double-overtime.
"I'm anxious to see where this squad wants to go and what kind of stamp they want to put on this season," Simmons said. "We're going to continue to improve throughout the season."
The Bears return to action next weekend at the Stanford Invitational, where they will take on No. 2 Stanford, No. 8 Pacific and No. 18 Indiana.
