BERKELEY – No. 20 California got a season-high 18 kills from senior
Bailee Huizenga, and 13 from fellow senior
Maddie Haynes on the way to a 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16 win over Oregon State on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion.
The Bears bounced back on the second night of a back-to-back with the Oregon schools to improve to 18-4 on the season and 8-4 in Pac-12 play. The eighth conference win of the season surpasses last year's season total through just 12 matches.
"I'm really proud of the way we responded tonight after our last three matches," Huizenga said. "We never broke down and knew that every game was going to be a fight. Everyone did their jobs tonight and we executed the scouting report, which allowed the hitters to be highly efficient. I'm really proud of the team for finding our rhythm again and I think we can carry it into Arizona next week,"
After taking the opening set, California used a run of seven straight points in the second frame to grab a 16-15 lead. The Bears didn't give up the lead the rest of the way to win the set 25-23. Oregon State (9-14, 3-9 Pac-12) didn't go away without a fight as they answered by winning the third set.
Cal responded in the fourth, breaking a 6-6 tie with a run of five straight points to go up 11-6 on a kill from junior setter
Isabel Potter. The Bears extended the lead from there on the way to a dominant 25-16 set on .542 hitting efficiency.
"The message for tonight was to focus on executing your job to the greatest of your potential for as long as it takes," Cal head coach
Sam Crosson said. "We knew OSU would be a tough serving team and a team who will compete, grind, and never give up. We always respect the game and our attentional control was in more relevant places for longer tonight. We wanted to see learning occurring as each set was played and I thought we showed signs of that tonight, which is promising."
