Seniors Hoover, Simsek Named To Seven-Man Team
WOODLAND, Calif. – California seniors Safak Simsek and Jordan Hoover were named to the 2019 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Men's Water Polo All-Tournament Team, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Simsek and Hoover, both seniors, led the Golden Bears to a MPSF Championship appearance with wins over fifth-seeded Austin College on Friday and top-seeded USC on Saturday. Cal eventually lost to No. 2 seed Stanford, 17-11, in Sunday's title match.
Simsek totaled 10 points (six goals, four assists) in the tournament despite missing Cal's opener against Austin College. The left-hander erupted for four goals and three assists against Stanford in the championship to finish his senior season with a team-best 74 points (52 goals, 22 assists).
Hoover recorded 10 drawn exclusions and added three goals, two assists and a pair of steals in Cal's three tournament contests. The senior captain's heroics led Cal past USC in Saturday's semifinal, as he found himself heavily involved in multiple key moments. Hoover had a hand in each of Cal's final three goals over the final 2:36 of the contest; he broke a 9-9 tie with his second of three goals, drew a five-meter penalty to set up a penalty-shot goal by Simsek and iced the contest with his third goal with 1:03 left on the clock.
Simsek and Hoover were two of seven MPSF players named to the all-tournament team. Stanford led the way with three players who earned all-tournament honors, including MVP Ben Hallock.
