Cal-UCLA Postgame Notes

Bears Improve To 7-5 With 28-18 Victory Over Bruins

  • With tonight's 28-18 win, Cal won at UCLA for the first-time since 2009 (45-26).
  • Cal improved to 4-2 on the road this season after going 3-2 in true road games last year. This marks the first time since 2004-05 that the Bears have had a winning record on the road in consecutive seasons.
  • With tonight's win and a 15-14 victory at USC last year, Cal has won games at the LA schools in back-to-back years for the first time since the 1970-71 seasons.
  • Cal has held its last four opponents to less than 100 yards rushing – Washington State (16), USC (56), Stanford (61) and UCLA (58).
  • With 9 tackles tonight, LB Evan Weaver set the Cal record for most tackles in a season, now with 173. Hardy Nickerson (1985) held the previous mark of 167.
  • Weaver also became the fourth player in school history to amass 400 tackles in a career, now with 403. The others are David Ortega (525, 1986-89), Hardy Nickerson (501, 1983-86) and Jerrott Willard (469, 1991-94).
  • The Bears' six total sacks set a season high (previous high: 5 vs. Oregon State). Against the Bruins, sacks were registered by Cameron Goode 2 (team-leading 8.5 this year), Brett Johnson, Lone Toailoa, Aaron Maldonado and team. Cal recorded at least three sacks for the third straight game (also 3.0 vs. USC and at Stanford).
  • RB Christopher Brown Jr. scored his 10th and 11th touchdowns of the season – a 1-yard run in the third quarter and a 10-yard rush in the fourth quarter. Eight of his scores have been rushing and three receiving. He later had a career-long 38-yard rush in the third quarter. Brown finished the game with 18 rushes for 111 yards – his second 100-yard effort of the year (also 197 vs. UC Davis).
  • WR Makai Polk scored on a 44-yard screen pass in the first quarter, his second TD of the season and his second-longest reception of the year. Along with a 52-yarder vs. Washington State, he has two of Cal's three longest TD catches this season. Polk set his career best for receptions (4) and yards (78)
  • RB Marcel Dancy tied his career long with a 28-yard reception in the second quarter (also vs. Arizona State in 2019).
  • Cal improved to 12-2 in games QB Chase Garbers has played more than a half, including 6-0 this season. The Bears are also 12-6 in games Garbers has started.
  • Garbers scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the season in the second quarter and second in as many games.
  • Kuony Deng broke up four passes during the game.
