NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – California women's tennis won three of their four opening matches at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships on Wednesday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club, with Valentina Ivanov leading off the day with a straight-set victory in the singles round of 64.
 
The Golden Bear upset Yale's 52nd-ranked Samantha Martinelli, 6-3, 6-2, and fellow Cal freshman Haley Giavara defeated Kentucky's Lesedi Jacobs, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5, in her opener. Cal junior Anna Bright, ranked 42nd, fell to the 17th-ranked Anna Turati of Texas, 6-3, 6-2.
 
On Thursday in the main draw round of 32, Giavara takes on Stanford's sixth-ranked and 14th-seeded Michaela Gordon at 1 p.m., while Ivanov faces UCLA's second-seeded Abigail Forbes at 2 p.m. Bright, in the consolation draw round of 32, plays a familiar opponent in Penn's 63rd-ranked Juliia Bryzgalova at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
 
In the doubles main draw on Wednesday, Bright and Giavara upset Penn's 59th-ranked pair of Bryzgalova and Marija Curnic, 6-4, 6-1. That set up a round of 16 match against Northern Arizona's Mimi Bland and Adrianna Sosnowska on Thursday at a time TBD.
