Emily Smith, Emma Westin Recognized For Academic Success

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – After stellar seasons both on the pitch and in the classroom, Emily Smith and Emma Westin have been named to the United Soccer Coaches' Scholar All-Region teams, the organization announced on Monday. Smith, a junior defender from Los Gatos, Calif., was named to the First Team All-West Region while Westin, a junior forward/midfielder from Stockholm, Sweden, earned Second Team honors.

The full list of Scholar All-Region honorees can be found here.

"Both Emma and Emily had outstanding seasons and a tremendous impact on our team's success, but have always had a true dedication to their academics," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "This award is very fitting and well-deserved."

To be eligible for Scholar All-Region recognition, student-athletes must have a 3.30 cumulative grade point average or better, be a junior or better in academic standing, and started at least 50 percent of their team games and be a significant contributor.

An applied mathematics major, Smith also earned First Team All-Region honors this season for play on the Bears' backline. A team captain and First Team All-Pac-12 selection, Smith led Cal to 10 total shutouts on the season and an overall goals against average of 0.692. A three-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week selection, Smith boasts an overall GPA of 3.95 and is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection.

A fellow CoSIDA All-Academic Selection, Westin earned Second Team All-Region honors after leading the Golden Bear attack this season. A member of Sweden's Under-23 women's national team, Westin tallied a career-high 11 goals, ranking among the conference scoring leaders this season and more than doubling her goal total from the previous two seasons. A business administration major, Westin earned Second Team All-Pac-12 honors at the conclusion of the regular season.

The individual honors for Smith and Westin continue a tradition of academic success for the Cal women's soccer program. The Bears earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award this fall for the seventh consecutive season and had eight players earn CoSIDA First Team All-District honors in 2019, the most by any team in the nation.
