BERKELEY – Twelve Golden Bears scored a total of 22 tries as California beat Cal Poly Saturday on Witter Rugby Field.
 
Marcus Shankland scored four tires for Cal and flyhalf Elliot Webb led all scorers with 33 points (three tries, 9-for-13 conversions) as the Bears improved to 8-0 (1-0 PAC). Jack Iscaro, Christian Dyer and Keanu Andrade each scored a brace for the Bears, and freshman Sam Walsh finished 4-of-9 in his conversion duties.
 
"We were able to launch our attack pretty well," said sophomore center Adam Roeske, whose try came in the 34th minute. "But we also allowed a couple of opportunities that we shouldn't be giving the other team a chance to capitalize on."
 
The Mustangs (1-6, 0-2 Calif.) missed their first scoring opportunity in the fifth minute, when Cal Poly captain Patrick Madden was wide left on his penalty attempt from 30 meters, but No. 8 Mikey Daley scored a try for the visitors at minute 75 to avert a shutout.
 
Freshmen Henry Poon and Jason Severance got starting nods for the Beas Saturday at scrumhalf and flanker, respectively, representing two more of the seven frosh-sophs in Cal's starting lineup. "I was humbled to get the start today and try to keep up," said Severance, who played the full 80 minutes and scored a try at minute 70.
 
In the reserve-grade contest following the Varsity XV, the Bears also defeated the Mustangs reserves.
 
Cal now turns its attention to British Columbia, who comes to Witter Rugby Field Saturday, Feb. 26, for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
