Bears Beat Aztecs On Parents Weekend
BERKELEY – California defeated San Diego State Saturday on Witter Rugby Field as 13 Golden Bears scored a total of 19 tries on the Aztecs and Cal recorded its fifth win of the 15-a-side season.
Cal (5-0, 0-0 PAC) got four first-half tries from Sam Cusano before the winger was replaced in the second stanza. Fellow starting winger Zachary Tavenner and flanker Thomas Spradling both scored two tries, as did second-half replacements Adam Roeske and Marcus Shankland. San Diego State falls to 0-3
The Cal backline was fed on Saturday by a freshman halfback combination in Henry Poon at scrumhalf and Sam Walsh at flyhalf, two of the five frosh-sophs in the Bears' starting lineup. "Henry and I have been working hard to get our timing right," said Walsh, who also shared conversion kicking duties with fullback Elliot Webb. "We just want to improve and keep getting better."
Cal also beat the Aztecs in Saturday's reserve-grade contest.
The Bears will next travel to Vallejo for a night match Wednesday at 7 p.m. at California Maritime Academy, then return home to host Arizona State in Cal's PAC Rugby Conference opener next Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. on Witter Rugby Field.
"We're looking forward to getting into the meeting room and analyzing this game," said captain Nic Mirhashem. "We have a busy schedule next week."
